There were two versions of the all-new 1960 Dodge. The lower-priced Dart models with a 118-inch wheelbase were designed to compete with Chevrolet, Ford, and Plymouth. The larger and dramatically styled Matador and Polara models had a four-inch longer wheelbase and taller tailfins that flowed dramatically ahead of 'jet-pod' taillamps. It is, without question, one of the boldest expressions of designer Virgil Exner's 'Forward Look' styling.
This particular Matador showcases the rather astonishing changes made for 1960, notably the high-sweeping Astro rear window. The spacious interior is highlighted by a driver-centered instrument panel with a speedometer that allows outside light to shine through. Technological highlights include unitized body/frame construction, a 'Super Red-Ram' 361 cubic-inch V8 engine, a TorqueFlite automatic transmission with push-button controls, and a torsion-bar front suspension. While lower-priced Dart models were regarded as one of the 'success cars' of 1960, Matador sales did not meet expectations and the model was discontinued for 1961.
