So, my catalytic converter on my '97 2.5L is going bad. It's not throwing any codes (yet), but it has an incredibly annoying rattle at idle. Mechanic and I have narrowed it down to the cat. I have been researching and I cannot seem to find a very cost-effective solution to this problem in California. My logic is, if I'm going to have to have an exhaust shop cut out and re-weld in a new cat (I'm looking at this one: Magnaflow 418036), might as well replace the whole exhaust while I'm at it. It would be easier/cheaper to replace just the mid-pipe/cat combo (like this one: Header Pipe with Catalytic Converter) but, ExtremeTerrain responded that this is not CARB compliant.
Is the best option if I want to replace the whole system to get new mid pipe, new CARB Compliant CAT, and Baker CARB Compliant cat-back exhaust?
I understand this isn't going to do anything in terms of power gains, my gutless 2.5L doesn't need it. But if I have to take it to an exhaust shop anyway, might as well replace the whole system, right? If I have to spend $450 on just the cat, it's not that big of a step up to replace the whole thing. Talk me out of it. Lol!
