Carpet replacement ideas

Since the bedrug doesn’t offer any heat or insulation properties, I might as well go back with original carpet. I noticed the tan color I was looking at on eBay didn’t have the piece behind the driver and passenger seats so I may have to get a different color.

Or if anyone knows anyone that is wanting to get rid of their factory carpet let me know 🙃 there is none near me locally

Would carpet from an 03-06 fit an 02? One piece behind the driver/passenger looks to be separate instead of one piece like in my year model.

I went with BedRug a couple years ago. It's molded plasticized fiber pieces — certainly not wicked luxurious. Lightweight, hold's up really well and can be easily taken out and hosed off.

I'd DEFINITELY consider lining the floor pan with heat/sound deadening insulation, especially the front and tranny tunnel. You won't regret it.

(not my photo - just an example)

I did not assert BedRug is better than “anything.” My post #10 is to her post #8 which is a comparison with “factory carpet.”

I don’t know anything first hand about any other carpet than factory, but I have three Jeeps and all came with factory carpet and the BedRug is better at this point in these TJ’s lives. The backing has decayed and the carpet is falling apart on two of them. Mine was just yuck and I couldn’t get it cleaned sufficiently.

My BedRug doesn’t move unless I remove it from the Jeep.

Cost and ACC's poor customer service (and even the effort it takes to do a clean install) aside .. If you see Bedrug vs mass backed Essex ACC in person you will realize there is just no comparison in terms of quality/comfort/looks.

I had Bedrug in my black Jeep. I will not recommend it over even used factory carpet in decent shape that's been cleaned well.

I like BedRug better than factory and here’s why. I’ve had four TJ’s with factory carpet. One was in decent condition, two are in fair condition, and one was in very good condition. That is irrelevant for my uses. Where I wheel it is dusty and it gets buried in the factory carpet as well as passes through the carpet into the tub. If you slap your hand on it dust comes up everywhere and settles on whatever. It is difficult to clean. I don’t have that problem with BedRug. YMMV

Carpet drill brushes work well :) But for your specific use case I understand you like Bedrug better.

I am trying to find a video where someone takes one of those pneumatuc massagers (or whatever they are called), touch it to a carpet and then suck the dirt that pops out with a vacuum. It got EVERYTHING out.

Carpet sucks. Carpet in a Jeep really sucks.

Buy Armorlite flooring and don’t have sucking flooring any more. It’s not cheap but quality is rarely cheap. Once you have it installed, you’ll wonder why anyone would willingly install carpet in a Jeep.

Not a salesman for the company or any vested interest…just a happy customer. One day I’ll buy a newer Jeep and the first modification will be Armorlite flooring.

Although I went with black, I purchased the inexpensive ebay carpet kit a few years ago for our 03.
The fit was OK, not great, but OK.
I had to fudge w/ the center console area near the hand brake lever as the shape was off a bit.
It fit for crap around the rear wheel wells.
I didn't add any insulation or sound deadening layers under it; not sure if that would help w/ the fit or make it worse.

It's definitely cheap carpet, but it's still black, and we run w/ the doors and top off more than not.
No holes, excessive wear, etc. but I also have Bestop floor mats and rear liner tray.

I posted about it a good while ago. Don't know anyone here on the board that has actually bought and installed one, you'd be the first.

@starkey480 did you ever decide on this thing?

Thanks, I missed that thread. Can you add the photos to the thread I started for people to find it more easily on a search?

Also .. after seeing the pics .. it seems thinner than I thought it would be (compared to the pics on the thread I had started). Is that a fair statement?

I don't think this is a item I would not buy and use. Carpet is easily the better choice for me and my preferences.

It’s thick and heavy. Thicker than a typical fitted floor mat. I got into some deep water while back and some water came in through the doors. Not a lot but a bit. Popped the drain plugs open, water ran out, and closed them back up.

Fantastic flooring for any vehicle but particularly a Jeep. Only way I’ll ever go in the future. If they made one for my F150 I’d be ripping out my carpet and installing it there too.

I second this. I debated what to do with my aging carpet for the last 7 years. Armorlite is not cheap for sure, but I couldn't be more pleased with a easy to clean surface that has good grip, cuts down on noise and heat surprisingly well, and does not soak up water like carpet. Long term durability is unknown but so far I'm happy with the added cost.

I did. I saw that at least one other person on here did as well, can't remember who though

Nope, I’ve just got the OEM carpet up front and a rubber floor mat from Home Depot cut to fit in the back. My jeep has gotten to the point where it’s a mostly topless jeep now so I haven’t thought about daily driving comforts in a while

I have everything but the wheel well covers. Just haven’t gotten around to ordering them yet. As expected though, looks great.

Can you remove it (easily) without taking the seats or center console out?

One thing I've not seen mentioned, unless I missed it, is geography can play a role in your choice. On the West coast, regular rain is less of a problem and carpet would be my choice. If you leave your jeep open and live in a rainy area, it may not be the best choice. Reason being, factory style carpet retains moisture and allows it to seep through to the floor. It also gets a musty smell pretty rapidly, if left wet. That smell then persists and is difficult to remove.

Since I live in an area that gets pop-up rain showers frequently, and keep my windows out 8 months of the year, I pulled my carpet and replaced it with Bedrug. Of course the tub could have been lined, but I don't like that look. Yes, Bedrug is not the best fitting product, but it solves a problem for those of us that live in wet areas and don't want to look at a lined only tub, or deal with nasty wet carpet. For the bad things mentioned about Bedrug, what it does do extremely well is protect water from seeping through, it doesn't retain water, doesn't mildew or get that funky smell, cleans up easily (mud, dirt, sand, etc.) and looks reasonably well, given the problem it solves.

Lizard skin is another permanent solution. Two coats, heat protection followed by sound deadening.

I have read about complaints about the product not performing up to expectations when I was researching what to replace the carpet with. No personal experience though.
