Hello,
My 98 4.0 catalytic converter is shot. Something broke off on the inside and it makes a loud annoying rattle when I go over bumps on the trail. It seems for the 98 there are two styles to choose from. Some are oval shaped like OEM and others are round. This isn't like the later TJs with 3 cats. I don't live in an emissions testing state so as long as it doesn't cause a check engine light I'm happy. Does anyone have experience to share?
Thanks,
Ken

Really depends on emissions rules in your area.

In my 97 I've installed a Banks exhaust manifold, and I got a great deal on a Hooker 2.5" stainless cat back exhaust kit.

My cat was acting like it was plugged...ordered some 2.5 inch stainless exhaust pipe from Amazon and a Magnaflow 2.5 inch high flow cat from Summit, along with an O2 sensor bung.

Welded up my own solution because I wanted mine tucked up tight. Wrapped it all in DEI exhaust wrap to keep the heat out of my oil pan and hide my terrible welds.

A Harbor Freight flux core welder and a piece of exhaust pipe should take care of that real easy. If you care about the CEL, you can "trick" the downstream sensor's feedback to the computer with a spark plug anti-fouler.
