Greetings all,

There is a high chance I’ll need to replace my catalytic converters. Looking for recommendations. I looked through multiple threads and websites and I keep hearing good things about flowmaster. My only push back on those is the current price. I saw prices went from $260 2 years ago to almost 1k as of now. Quite ridiculous but here we are.

Any other brands that y’all recommend? I can’t find much info.

Thanks!

WALKER 15841 is what I purchased for my 98. It's $186.79 at Rock Auto as of today. I had a flowmaster front to back and replace it with Walker Front to back because the flowmaster system was way to loud.

I wound up going through I think 3 of the generic parts house brands (turned out to ultimately all be the same part) before I got a Maganflow that finally sealed with the header on my 2001, royal PITA. Magnaflow wound up being just a touch more (like less than 10%) and wish I had just gone with it first.

Watching this. My efficiency code came back after all 4 O2 sensors were replaced... 20 years seems fair for the original cat. 🐈

Are you just replacing the upstream ones or are you replacing all 3?

Well I was told about 2 years ago that one of upstream ones was starting to act funky. But really all should probably be replaced at this point. The 3rd one looks like someone had cut the original one, and welded a magnaflow and it looks like it’s starting to get a hole (rust).

What I find extremely odd is, I had a similar issue 2 years ago (sudden loss of power, then it’s like the Jeep coughs and it gains power again). When I would turn on the Jeep, it would idle like crap and shake. Turn it off, and back on and goes away. 2 years ago when I had this checked, the ignition coil was faulty, and it was due for a tune up, and all of this fixed the sudden loss of power issues. Had no problem since then. Still had the cats checked then and was told 1 of the upper ones wasn’t as efficient but was not a big deal.

Fast forward to now, same symptoms. It has been shaky upon start every now and then. Turn it off, then back on, and it’s goes back to normal. But I did find kind of funny that I didn’t get this loss of power until I hit a bump, and my engine code tuned on 🤣 it’s an old fart so I’m not surprised. Maybe it’s time to hit another bump make it go away

All jokes aside, what do y’all think? How to proceed?

I replaced the two upstream ones with some off of Amazon and then just straight piped it from there

The check engine light went away on its own. Had the inspection done then 🤣

prior to this however I am starting to have loss of power more often, I knocked on the upper catalytic converters and I do not hear any rattling. Was thinking that the signs/symptoms and considering they would show up after hitting a bump would match with broken inside pieces of the cat. It makes sense, if I hit a bump and the spiderweb stuff inside moves around to clog it, then I start having the engine light and loss of power problems.

What I still do not understand is… how does turning off the engine and back on resolve the momentarily idling issues? I turn on the Jeep and feel rough idle. If I keep driving it like that then I have the loss of power problems guaranteed at some point during the drive. I however found out that if I turn the engine off, and back on, I no longer have these problems.
