Changing my own tires

Yep this sucks already. Getting a tire off was like 40mins of figuring out what to do and 5 mins of doing it. Getting it on is hard and I got stuck I'll try again tomorrow 😂

You got stuck...Like couldn't advance, or you literally got stuck in the tire and had to yell for help?

Just stuck in progression lol.

Came inside to watch videos. It looks so easy in all the videos what is that about. Getting the old tire off was like 90% technique I guess. I have some ideas for tomorrow

Where did you get stuck? Getting it on should be 1- lay wheel on flat hard surface, 2- lube tire beads, 3- shimmy tire on wheel as much as possible, which will be about 1/2 way, 4- jump on that MFer from the top rope landing with all of your weight near the section that needs to slip on, then use tools to assist as needed.

#4 forsure. I might just need to hit it with my purse harder

You have a decent size tire, so it shouldn't be too hard, maybe just a little learning curve. It's funny, I used to change commercial truck tires daily with minimal issue, but I had a 12" lawnmower tire beat my ass one time to the point I got someone else to finish the job.

I did a quick search and it looks like this guy does a decent job. Personally, I would stay on my knees where he's walking.

I agree... Removal went from impossible and frustrating to super easy when I figured out what to do. It was just humid yesterday and lots of mosquitoes so I gave up easily thinking I was missing the "trick".

Encouraging the bigger tire is supposed to be easier I was assuming the opposite!

Not the first guy I see using pure soap. I am gonna up the soap in my soapy water ratio. He makes it look so easy 😂

I also noticed that most wheel have a recess for the bead to get "slack" to pull the tire over the wheel. The wheels I have don't have a recess, it kinda just tapers down on one side, which I think makes it harder to keep the opposite side in the right spot when you pull the other side up.

Up to a point. When you need equipment to move the tire, it starts getting hard again.

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about, do you have a pic?

We'll see if my jeep ever gets that far...

Yeah most videos say the trick is to get one side of the bead into this recess:

Putting it in the smaller diameter portion of the rim gives the bead room to go over the edge of the wheel.

I think I'm having a hard time keeping that part of the bead in the skinnier part of the wheel since the wheel looks like this and is easier to slip off:

Just need more practice though. Looks like I may have been trying to do it upside down last night but I definitely tried both sides 😂 I might try to keep soap off the side of the bead already "on" the tire too

You might need a heavier purse.

Haha. Really I must be doing it pretty dang wrong. Dudes on YouTube mounting semi truck tires using 12" motorcycle spoons and I can't do it with the 37" spoons. It's gotta be the technique

Yep work from the other side of the wheel but make sure you're putting the tire on the way you want it, would suck to have to remove it because you put it on backwards.

I did notice halfway through the tires are marked "outside" and "inside". Good thing I didn't get far before finding that out

What tires are you working with? Are they directional or have a "curb protector"?

They're mickey Thompson Baja boss MTs. Don't know what curb protector is I am guessing they are directional since it says outside on them?

Some tires have a built-up area around the rim.

Some companies advertise it as a "rash guard", a "rim protector", "curb guard" etc. Those Micky Ts aren't directional, so I'd guess they have that built-up sidewall and probably call it a "rock guard" or something like that.

Yeah it does have that lip. I think that is making it harder to get the irons between the tire and wheel
