I have 2005 TJ that came with stock radio, speakers and it has the factory sub in the console.
For a jeep it's OK and I didn't expect anything more. Only issue was with the volume knob.
It wouldn't work all the time. You have to keep turning the volume button left/right to get the volume to respond.
I read that there was a fix for it but I didn't feel like removing the radio apart to fix it.
I started to look at cheap android radios so I can have larger display paired with the phone
and install rearview camera.
My criteria was
- Inexpensive but known brand.
- Sigle din since I did not want to cut any part of the dash interior and wanted to use existing
Front dash panel.
- Large touch screen.
- Android Auto
- Rear Camera
- Has to have physical volume knob
- European tuning option for FM (might export the Jeep to Europe)
- Removable touchscreen display so it can be hidden out of peoples view when Jeep is parked

I ended up buying from Amazon Boss Audio BCPA9. I got it for $200 on discount.
It's basic android radio but pretty much checks all the boxes. It has 9" display.
Size of 9" display looks/fits very nice with the TJ dash it's not too large.
I also purchased 2 cameras since the radio has also option for the front.
Install is very simple for the radio I just ended up buying Metra wiring harness 70-6502
Metra Pocket Dash kit 99-6502 & Antenna adapter Metra 40-CR10
Camera are also from Amazon PixleMan PMD2A each was $40
Below are some photos of the install of the rear camera and wiring option I chose.
Metra wiring harness matches up with Boss radio harness very good.
I don't have full install details but hardest part was running the rear camera wiring.
I wanted rear camera to have both options to come on when Jeep is reverse and also
to have it on when driving if choosing to do so. You have to run wire from the rear
reverse light to the head unit so it triggers the camera when backing up.
Radio provides dedicated front camera power wire so it can be viewed when driving any time.
Front camera was a nice to have option with Boss radio. I installed it under the license plate mount.
Both cameras can have grid lines off if choose to do it.
Display quality is very good. Touchscreen is responsive. Radio reception is excellent.
Sound quality is on par or better then factory radio since it has built in equalizer.
Overall I like it a lot for the money spent.

Do you like having an android head unit?

I found it to be pretty obnoxious. I have a nice phone and much prefer when my radio just plays the sounds from my phone and replicates my maps, rather than needing to connect the fucking car to Wi-Fi to download Spotify, Maps, etc.

One of the cars I bought has one of these and I'm probably going to get rid of it for something more "normal". Dealing with two phones in the car is fucking annoying.

I recently purchased the 10 inch version of that radio, Boss BE10ACP. I got the rear camera, but didn't see the need for the front camera. I also got HD cam recorders front and back to record any problems with people on the road. But, that is separate from the radio. I added a wireless toggle to the Boss, so I don't have wires running all over my console, and no plugging and unplugging my phone. I just turn on my Jeep and my phone automatically connects to the radio. Then, I added a wireless cup holder phone charger, and all the wires are hidden under my console, so there are no visible wires over my console. The two provided USB connectors worked great for each purpose. One USB for the Wireless Toggle and the other one for the Wireless Phone Charger. Nice radio and it plugged into my Alpine PDX-V9. With the extra 1/2 din space, I installed a Clarion EQ which better controls my subwoofer and Amplifier Output Level.

I went double din. cutting the sub dash was easy just use a piece of metal to protect the wire bundle on the drivers side of the opening. haven't hooked up the camera's yet and don't know if I will. every thing was less than $250.

I’m very happy with my Joying.

Wireless CarPlay, so no need to download apps etc and I never listen to Am/Fm, physical volume, rear camera works well and I don’t need a front for the mall but I think it can support dual cameras. Bonus if you like to tinker, the unit can support independent GPS for out of cell coverage.

Single DIN so it doesn’t block AC vents and with a low mount wireless charger, the dash and windshield stay clear.

So yours isn't like, a tablet where you have to download apps? Or did you have to download carplay and then it's all through the phone after that?

IDK much about the one I have. I think it might be a really cheap one

CarPlay worked out of box (and it automatically loads on startup) I emailed them to get the latest firmware but otherwise haven’t touched it since I installed it last March. Also drives my kenwood 4 channel amp and Crutchfield/SoundOrdnance sub.

Okay nice! Yeah maybe the one in my car sucks then 😂 that's not a bad price either. I remember paying 200$ for a plain single DIN one in high school lol.

I did front cameras too but a little different. I used an input switcher and pointed the front cameras at the front tires. Still haven't tested it out off road but just screwing around in the driveway and on curbs, I think it's going to work great on the trail.

That's pretty cool. It seems useful, I wonder how hard it will be to train yourself to look there instead of out the windows

I think not hard when I'm creeping looking for a certain rock or line. Wrapping your head around quickly switching between viewing perspectives can be difficult, but that's a skill I have and get plenty of practice with at work.

Where did you mount them? Middle of the bumper? I was thinking of moving mine there to "zoom out" a bit.

Oh, and you have a physical volume knob? Now you're just rubbing it in.

One is screwed into the steering gear guard. The other might be into the frame just behind the tube that connects the frame rails.

That’s my old radio. It decided to not turn off when everything else turned off. New one has a knob too. The new build may not get one though as the alpine is my front runner, lack of knob is my hang up.
