I have a 2004 TJ Rubicon with the 4.0 and automatic (42RLE). About 4 years ago, I was having shifting issues between 1st and 2nd where it felt like a slip/missed the gear, but would only do it once in a blue moon (never threw a code), and would shift into 2nd after about 1-2 seconds of stuttering. I tried everything (sensors, new fluid, new filter, checked wiring, new TCM) and eventually got the entire thing rebuilt. This still didn't fix my issue, and more recently I was on the freeway when it was switching around between 3rd and 4th, and seemed like it couldn't make its mind up. It went into limp mode and luckily I was only going about 50 at the time and was about a quarter mile from home. About a month has passed and I've taken it to trans shops and different mechanics, and have scoured these forums for possible solutions. I replaced speed sensors, have a fairly new battery, cleaned ground connections, and inspected wires going to and from the ECU to TCU, and to the trans itself. It was throwing a P1698 code and after a week of the same answers, and since I had a factory TCU installed in 2018, I went ahead and got an ECU from wranglerfix.com. The first one they sent me was apparently messed up and threw a P0601 code. Sent it back, got my replacement this morning, and threw it in, and it had a severe misfire on cylinder 2 (P0202). I am at a total loss and cannot keep throwing money at it. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Just got off the phone with him and he's sending another one out. He said he'll be going out to dinner with the tech who builds all the ECUs tonight and wrote down some notes to talk to him about. Said he'd call me in the morning.

Good deal! Let’s see what happens. Mark is one of the most stand up and trustworthy guys I know. You’re in good hands. If it really is a PCM issue, he will get you fixed up. Report back with what you find with the new PCM.
