Agreed! We're about an hour and fifteen minutes away. It will be worth it. I love Pacific City in the Summer. The most enjoyable part is sitting there at the Pelican and watching vehicles get stuck in the sand... like clockwork!
That certainly sounds entertaining! I haven't hung around too much other than hiking at the cape.
Oh believe me, it's quite a sight to see. @StG58 knows exactly what I'm talking about.
You'll see people in stock height Honda Civics drive down onto the beach and literally get stuck the moment they hit the sand. Last Summer we were only there for a few hours, but I counted 10 vehicles that got stuck in that time.
There's a local guy there in the summer with a tow truck and a winch. He charges people $50 to pull them out of the sand and makes a killing doing it. He and I had a personal talk and he told me during the Summer he makes some serious money due to how many people get stuck.
For whatever reason or another, everyone thinks their car can go on the sand.
Haha yeah I can imagine it now. That does sound like a good way to make some cash! Every time I drive up the Clackamas in the winter I end up having to pull out at least one person every time. Hasn't failed me yet.
I think I posted this on my build thread, but my favorite one was pulling out a 90's Camry/Corolla (I don't remember which) a mile up a FS road with a foot or more of snow on it. Came across them and they looked so happy to see me haha.
Yeah! I could understand helping someone out and not charging them, but if it's happening at the rate it happens in Pacific City, then I see no reason not to make some money off of it. Especially when calling an actual tow truck would cost $300 or more... that makes $50 seem like an awesome deal.
The real question was why was a 90s Corolla driving up a FS road in the first place?
When it snows in the city I've considered doing that, it'd be an absolute gold mine around here! :risas3:
They said they thought they were headed to Bagby. Me and my buddy were pretty surprised to even come across them in the first place! They ended up being the only people we saw that day too haha.
Oh yeah... in Portland it would be a gold mine. Those people in the city are absolutely horrible in the snow. You remember that 2016 (was it 2016) snowpocalypse where they had literally abandoned their vehicles in the middle of highway 26? That just about says it all about Portland drivers.
Those people are lucky you came across them. Had you not, they might have had a long and cold walk back to civilization... depending on how far away from it they were?
Yup! That was probably the worst ever. I worked downtown during that event and wasn't off until 6 so I watched it unfold in front of me. Thankfully I ended up not driving that day and rode transit. Still got stranded on the train and had to walk a couple miles, but I ended up being better off than most people that day!
Where they were it would've been equally as much work to walk to either Detroit or Estacada, not many other options in between. They likely would've come across somebody before that point, though.
Yep, my mother-in-law was stuck in it for literally 8 hours on the highway. I'm so glad I didn't live in Portland at that time. That had to have been one of the biggest nationwide examples of how much people in Portland simply suck at driving. That snow was nothing to what they get in a place like Colorado for instance.
Yes, they probably would have, but it still would have sucked for them nonetheless. I guess those are the times where it pays to have a Jeep (or at least some sort of capable 4x4).

Yup, Pacific City is pretty unique with the Dories and the stickage / sand carnage. Hours of cheap entertainment. Next time you're over there look for the 15th Street Jeepers, a local club. Jeeps and red hoodies. Nice folks.
