Plenty of serching and reading has got me a bit perplexed on this one as I cant find the answer yet. So here we go, kicking the aquatic ant hill - can your cooling system over cool the 4.0l ?

Short backstory - like many i picked up my first Jeep (02, 4.0l, with 2 speed), and am now an hooked, want it to last forever :) I read a bunch about how overheating kills them and after seeing a few times saw a needle width or two over 210 in traffic in Houston ith AC on, i decide to tinker and refresh the cooling system.

Stumble upon Flowkooler, and figure why not more cooling has to be better right? Flush coolant system well, Slap it flowkooler waterpump with a new thermostat, new rad hoses, and viola - Jeep runs cool for a day and boom radiator tank cracks. It was original, so i slap in a parts store "murray" replacement rad. Bleed system again, and boy does it run cooler on the dummy gauge... Plug in my OBD2 reader and drive around some, and glance at the app everyonce in a while the thing hits 195 ish but not more yet...I know its designed to run in that range but on the highway it dips lower like low 180s before the therostat opens again.

How cool is too cool of an operating temp? Im wondering if in my penchant for "more is better" did "too much of a good thing"? If the computer is looking for 200 degrees or 210 even - Am i overthinking it all too much or should i go back to a normal pump?

My thermostat started opening at lower and lower temperatures. It'll kill your gas mileage and the Jeep will run rich as the PCM trys to warm up the engine.

I pulled my thermostat and put it in hot water...started opening at 160...both a Napa and O'Reilly's sourced thermostats opened at 165.

Took a Robert Shaw from Flowkooler and now I'm a steady tick to the left of 210.

Oreilly thermostat installed here - reading this im thinking it makes sense pul it and see where it opens then. Heck while its out might as well wait on a 195 degree robertshaw it sounds like? Danggit.

I run the same one and my temp stays just left of 210 consistently.

Appreciate the info guys. Looks like im puling this one, will test and report back. Robershaw 195 ordered 👍👍

Another one for robertshaw. The Mopar I used previously started sticking part way open, just a hair. It was enough that it would run around 175-180 in cooler weather and took forever to warm up. It's possibly a coincidence but my mpg has been averaging about 0.2 better since I'm back at design temp.

There's a little notch on the radiator side, the bullet side, for the self-bleeding, if you didn't know-not the easiest thing to see.

Thanks for the tip - I would have missed that! Put it in tonight. When the thin skin of rtv on the housing is cured tomorrow, I'll fill it up and fire it up with the robertshaw thermostat!
