Could it be my distributor?

I looked at my distributor today. There’s about 1/4” of play up and down and close to the same rotational slop on the shaft. By now you all know my woes so I’ll spare the sad story. According to my father (71 yo who’s been a professional mechanic/shop owner for 30+ years) this amount of slop could be enough for a few degrees of timing offset. I’m still getting @ -14 fuel trims LT and bad power lack over 50 mph (4.56 gears on 32’s with 3 speed auto) lucky to maintain 55 mph. What’s the crowd think here ? Is it worth the $115 distributor swap ?

Yeah, the computer is setting the timing but the dizzy is at a different timing, so it adjusts the fuel mix to compensate.

I mean, theoretically.

Kinda my thinking. If this doesn’t work I swear on all that is holy I will buy a vacuum controlled HEI dizzy, a 5# fuel pump regulator, and a nice single barrel Holley carb and call this shit a wrap ! I’ll weld the bungs shut for the O2’s out of pure spite and be happy happy happy.

Former PO had the timing gears one tooth out. That was all of my issues from day one 😂 it’s fixed now.

I felt like timing came up several times as a possibility, sounds like we were on the right track there.

I felt like it was as well but someone who shall remain nameless told me “a 2.5L will absolutely not run one tooth out on the timing” ….it wasn’t me. Never the less ! I finally figured it out and the damn thing is fixed. …..now I just gotta fix the oil leak I left on the timing cover 😂😂 God life sucks sometimes

If you’re in my state someone with one tooth would’ve told you that a 2.5 will not run ....

Nice job! You mentioned you had some up/down play on your distributor in your original post. I don't think that's normal. I noticed that kind of play on my distributor and thought nothing of it until one morning the distributor cracked at the hold down bolt because my Jeep was missing the hold down clamp. I'd recommend double checking yours.

I went ahead and replaced it. For $100 it was at least a preventative maintenance item.
