Cummins R2.8 swap Alaska build

I ended up with I think 4 fuse boxes at this point and it's something I'd like to address one day, but I keep having other stuff to address. I think there's 2 boxes that are OEM. The big box is mostly eliminated, but it still has a couple things I need in there. I have 1 that came with the axis kit and 1 that I use with aftermarket lights and other gadgets. It would be nice to put my ARB stuff in something too, but they're just mounted with all the wiring they came with for the compressor and lockers.

i’ll have to go find your build

where did you mount the OBA. i was thinking about getting a dual ObA compressor, mounted on the left under the brake master

I ended up putting mine under my front seat, because the other fuse boxes kept taking up space and it just seemed like a spot I wasn't using in the Jeep. The air attachment is pretty conveniently located too to air up tires and occasionally I'll blow out a radiator of a tractor that's become super clogged.

Of course I also have an aftermarket seat and mounting bracket too. It's a bit busy (fire extinguisher mounted in the front of the seat bracket and AUX battery/Charge controller/solar hook ups behind the seat) in that area though and I made the mistake of running my wiring too much in the tub and they did get flooded at some point and shot my fuse. The ARB compressor hasn't been incredibly reliable in that Jeep either because I had to replace the motor once in just a very few very light uses.

In the future I may end up with their double compressor setup or something else, because it would suck to lose my lockers when I need them.

I'm curious to see how this build turns out! I've always admired @BugoutJeep R2.8 cummins swap, and I think both of you made the correct decision to go with a crate engine Cummins. For my swap I told myself I didn't have the funds, but with the number of engines, adapters, transmissions, turbos, intercoolers and power steering pumps I've gone through, I could have easily afforded the cost of the R2.8 and saved a TON of time and money on my swap. I started with a Kubota but switched to a VW BEW TDI after I found out I was going to have problems getting it inspected where I was living at the time, though I've now moved to a different state, I didn't know that was going to happen years ago when I made that decision.

Also talking from experience, going with a manual transmission is the fastest way to go. I've been stubborn on going automatic, and I think I have a working combination that works, I should know this week actually. If this automatic gives me anymore issues though, I'm swapping in the set of Right Hand Drive manual transmission pedals I bought from Australia and I'm going to put in the NV3550 that currently in my wrecked TJ Rubicon behind my shop and I'll be done with swap.

Go luck with the build and keep the updates and pictures coming! I'm curious to see how it turns out and what you think of the setup!

I have been watching your YouTube channel for a while and had no idea you were on the forum! Appreciate the kind words, and of course all the knowledge from your channel!

I have also been racking my brain about 2 things coming very soon to my build....

Fuel cap... I'm going to have to modify the filler neck for diesel, what cap if any will fit?
The other thing is air box.... I don't know if I will have enough room to run the TJ factory air box. Would like to have something similar due to the fact of I do wheel and don't want to suck up anything just running a open filter.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

two methods. you can punch the restriction plate out,

or as i did. i bought a new diesel neck from an 03 Dodge 2500 and cut it down to size with new hose.

and are getting all this work done from the massive amounts of Snow.

we would drive down from Fairbanks and laugh at all the idiots that couldn’t drive in snow. cars on the roof all over the place

Just started watching some YouTube and saw @RustyAutoholicGuy used one from a diesel liberty.

So I'll look at whatever is cheapest or if somebody has one laying around in their junk pile up here.

The snow is no joke this winter. The worst is it's freeze/thaw time. Just got back up to mid 30s and rain hah.

Usually when the jeep has you know.... A motor installed... Lol. I would cruise the Glenn and just pull out random people stuck along the highway. Terrible drivers up here.

The people around Anchorage IMO are like the people around Seattle. When it first snows every winter they act like they've never seen snow & in Seattle after a dry summer when it rains people drive like they have never seen rain before.

Agreed!!!

I thought it was because of mostly military and being from all of the world, but I think Anchorage driver's just don't understand how to slow down... That and they run crap tires...

It's really easy to remove that restrictor plate and just open it up a little. I opened it up a bit too much, but that's not a terrible thing either because it's a little easier to fill with various cans off-road. Though I don't have to fill it up either because the range is pretty spectacular with the extended range fuel tank and diesel.

how long would it take to fill up a 16 gallon take at 18 wheel pump speed 😂

I had just seen on forums that you had to open that up, but I took it all the way back to the tube diameter, which is not necessary. I've even read guys not doing anything and they just have to hold the pump handle. There's probably a reference diameter for the pump diameter.

The 1 thing I did personally want to get was a green fuel cap, but the only green fuel cap I might even possibly have would either be on an Oliver or John Deere. I have seen it on trucks nowadays, but not sure when that started, but I'm guessing it started with DEF.

they sell the green ones in magnetic connection which was a reason i went for the dodge 2500 dimmer neck since it is metal

So you use the magnet to not lose the cap? I've been putting the cap in my seat so I remember to put it back.

Small update on the motor swap. Did some test fitment today, cut out the old mounts, modified trans mounting bracket, and massaged the tub to gain some clearance. Hopefully next weekend I'll have the motor resting in it's new home!
