My '05 TJ is having a minor electrical/switch issue, but I'm not exactly sure what the root issue is. When the lights are on, the instrument lights come on but the HVAC lights don't usually (thought the lights were burned out till just recently). The weird part is while the dimmer function doesn't work, the dash illumination comes on and the radio dims with the lights on but the odometer flickers between bright and dim. Wth? I think have at least a pair of electrical gremlins at work here. I'm reasonably certain the dimmer adjustment function of the multifunction switch is bad, but why would only certain things dim while others don't. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar issues. I can't get consistent results with any of the "wiggle tests" I've tried thus far. I've ordered new lights for the whole panel (have a couple bad bulbs) but am hoping to try to figure this out while I have the dash torn apart.

I agree with the grounds. Common problem that is often overlooked. MFS problems are also common and easily replaced. Please let us know when you find the actual cause
Still chasing my tail on this one. Getting into the wiring there's obvious evidence of former tampering with a variety of the harnesses under the dash. Lots of dead end splices and odd wires. Someone prior def had tried to do some shadetree electrical work. Going to try the MFS replacement soon see if that fixes it.
