Do I need to replace my 42RLE automatic transmission?

05 TJ with auto transmission and 6 cyl. I was cruising at about 60 and felt a pop in the transmission and the rpm's went from 2000 to about 2900. Continued driving for a few miles, I pulled over and put in park, when I put it back in drive nothing would happen. Nothing in 4wd or reverse either.

Shop is saying I need a new transmission. Is this true?

Hard to say but I'd get another opinion on that shop's claim it needs to be replaced. It could just be they don't know how to work on the 42RLE.

@Wranglerfix Mark is that a problem a blown PCM could cause? It's not a symptom I've heard of with a bad PCM but....

Most (all) electronic transmissions will have a fail safe mode where disconnecting the electronics will mechanically default to 1 gear usually second so the vehicle is still drivable. The 42RLE does this. My 06 had a computer problem where the engine computer would not communicate with the trans computer occasionally on startup. The trans would default to second gear. Happened in Baker one evening, I tried about 10 restarts and when I had first gear I drove straight home without shutting it off.

You may of had a band or one way clutch break. Try shifting to manual 1 or 2 to see if it moves.

@Mikeshaugh Did you have any other symptoms prior to this happening? Below are some of the common failures on an 05-06 automatic:

A hard shift from 1st to 2nd when cold, high transmission temperatures, o2 sensors showing bad when good and 1600 codes.

@Jerry Bransford I have not heard of that. It could be an intermittent wiring issue if none of the above symptoms are present.

Sometimes it is easier to find Waldo in the wilderness than find a wrong wire on a Wrangler!
