Does anybody have experience decoding VINs?

Im scratching my head currently. Inside door sticker says manufactured 7/99, and I’ve been under the impression it’s a 2000 sport, but looking at the decoding chart, my 6th digit in the VIN is a 4, saying that it’s a Sahara.

How can I verify this information? When I ran a car fax it came as a sport. Please help!

There is a Jeep/Chrysler website you can key in your VIN and get the full build spec.

Yes this is what I used to get to my question, but the Carfax says sport and all badges are gone.

Upon entering my VIN on Jeeps website, it says it’s a sport. I guess the decoder was incorrect but I thought I got one over on the dealer. Damn!

Well originally I was just verifying that it was a 2000 because a specific part I needed, but then went down the rabbit hole. You know how that is.

it is a 2000 but it was built in 1999 like all other car manufatures thats usually how it goes. in october is usually when the following year is released. ya dig?

That was my initial search but the question was about the VIN code for sport vs Sahara. I know manufacturers release the following year in the last quarter, but I was just double checking because it was only July and not like November. Thanks for the help.

Or if you have an export Jeep (case in point , mine) its says built in 97 exported in 98 but registered here as a 99.....so mine has identity issues as well. lol

Tenth digit of the VIN is the model year code. X=1999, Y=2000
