Don't forget to belt up, kids

That's definitely a scary video and a good reminder for a couple things:
1. Always wear your seatbelt.
2. If someone is ejected (or any car or otherwise risk for spinal injury), do not move them unless you need to get them out of harms way (fire, unstable situation, etc). You see that guy jarring the accident victim, definitely cringe. If he has a spinal injury, that's going to make it worse.

I used to work as an EMT and this is a common mistake. They should not be moved until they're in a cervical collar and placed on a back board and stabilized (taped or strapped down). Also a good time to have a ham radio. That person should be air lifted to a hospital if at all possible.

That part really got me.

Another reason why I hate Sunroofs. Lessons I learned while working 10 yrs in a Level II ER.
1) Wear your seatbelt they save lives.
2) Wear a helmet EVERY time you ride.
3) Buy a good helmet. The cheap/cool skullcaps don’t do shit.

Dang, seeing that makes me worry about whether a typical 3 point seatbelt is enough. For my kids, in particular. I don't really take risks like that with them riding along but that makes me think about 5 point harnesses.

A rollover is not a single incident. It is multiple crashes one after another. Every time a corner hits the ground its like a single crash. If not restrained properly you will get ejected. The CHP had a display that they brought to public events that illustrated this. They had a trailer with a window less pickup cab on a rotisserie. They placed a dummy behind the wheel and spun it around ejecting the dummy. Then they seat belted the dummy in and spun it. The dummy stayed put but the arms flung out. I’ve dealt with many ER patients with crushed or severed arms from car and ATV roll overs.

You can see this effect in onboard racing crash videos frequently. Depending on the series, some require the use of arm restraints for this very reason.

This guy might consider using them next time. You can see his arms flying around uncontrolled in the slo-mo as the car flips, he got really damn lucky. Physics can be a cruel mistress...

The first cameraman needs a kick in the dick. Missed all the action.

Yesterday I saw a video of the same wreck from almost the same angle as the first half and it showed the whole thing but I didn't notice him making contact with the roof as the second half of this shows. I'm sure watching it on my phone didn't help.

Of course I can't find that video this evening to watch it on the wide screen connected to my laptop.
