Double DIN Android Head Unit (InsaneAudio TJ1001) Chinese Knock-Off Review

Not to beat a dead horse, but I think I might have a solution for us 97-02 owners...

03-06 is the 22 pin harness versus what I think is a 14 pin harness, at least that's the case with my 2002 Wrangler X. However on the 22 pin harness, only 16 pins are actually present, of those two extra pins, I think one is an extra ground and the other I'm not sure, maybe CD player? When I put the stereo in my jeep the harness/adapter I purchased came with the 14 pin connectors which is what my jeep has AND the newer style 22 pin, and looks exactly like the image I've attached. I noticed that these two different harness styles are both fused together for 12+, ground, dimmer, accessory etc.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but if this radio is plug and play, it might be possible to reverse engineer the 22 pin side of the harness and replace the male connector with a female connector, which would then create a direct interface with the already-attached 14 pin harness, which in theory should create a proper connection with the newer style radio for an older style harness, since they are all linked accordingly. All you would need is a female 22 pin harness with a few inches of wire to replace the male end, and splice it all together.

Thoughts?

(ignore the part about the Grand Cherokee this can be used for Wranglers too)

If I could do it over again I'd order it straight from roadnav.com simply because that vendor has a really good forum with active moderators and even a few developers.

I got mine from:

http://www.ebay.com/usr/tradesolution07

He was really helpful in making sure I got the right unit for my 06 LJR. It even came with the plug and play harness. If you get it from roadnav.com I'm not sure that you'll get the harness. The eBay seller was awesome. He was initially sent the wrong unit and noticed the discrepancy and confirmed with me before sending it my way. He was on top of it. I'd recommend him for sure. I still use the roadnav.com forum even though I didn't buy it from them.

Where did you find the download link for the latest firmware update? No idea if mine is updated and would like to update it anyway.

Just found this and seriously want this in my Wrangler! I wish Amazon still had it that would be amazing! I really like how it fit's into the stock location without having to modify dash!

Here’s a direct link to RoadNav’s site that seems to still have it for sale:

http://www.roadnavi.com/product/m201-jeep-wrangler-media-satnav-2003-06/

“Aftermarket In-dash car dvd player w/ GPS navigation system for Jeep Wrangler 2002-2006. Headunit is designed to upgrade stock radio, no gap installation, no cut wires, support rear view camera.”

Totes awesome.

This one has Windows CE.... which I do NOT recommend, but if windows is your thing then here you go:

I -know- I had found an updated one with Android 8.0 (or whatever the latest greatest Android is) not very long ago. I really recommend the android version over the windows version. I loathe Windows and being able to have access to the thousands upon thousands of apps available on the android market is totally kick ass.

Did I mention it was literally plug and play?

The link above for the Android model looks like it is an older model, can you post one with the latest up to date unit? Also this may be a dumb question because it had a DVD player but will it play a CD? Stuck between this unit and a pioneer avh 3400 7 inch flip up screen... Does it provide similar sound as pioneer would? Sell me on it, would like the more stock look of this tbh.

I don’t know if a newer roadnav model. This one looks awesome. It’s a different vendor but same concept.

That link is terribly long. If it doesn’t work for you let me know.

Not only is it way faster it’s all updated.

So, uhm, I ordered a Chinese knockoff stereo for the LJ. There is nothing else like it on the market. The closest thing is the InsaneAudio TJ1001... but I'd argue that the Chinese knockoff is better. It runs Android... I wish it ran iOS but that'll never happen.

You can get it here:

Since it runs android, I've installed Pandora, Netflix, Google Maps, and Plex!

It's freakin amazing. Looks stock too.

Did you have to retro fit the casing over the radio?

I got the same stereo as OP from aliexpress.com (I used a different seller, but several are selling the same device. Make sure you don't get the window ce/"wince" model). It works sort of like ebay in that the website holds the money until the seller ships and you confirm receipt). Shipping took almost two months, but it is a really nice unit that has a modern but stock look.

@badlieutenant, did you ever add a TV antenna or reverse camera? What about a subwoofer? I contacted the seller and they said it would power a sub on its own, but I wonder ...

Wait, is this the updated version or...? The RoadNavi one @$400 is a little pricey, and this one is in my budget.

@badlieutenant, thank you so much for this thread!!

Yes that’s the new one, but make sure it’s the right fit because the link is kinda old. Should be good tho. The roadnav said it was for a Chrysler town and country minivan.

I found this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/For...Radio-TV-DVD-BT-iPod-3G-WIFI/32234952525.html

I wish I could find it for cheaper, but damn. It's just a clean look that fits with what's there. My impulse here is that my center console sub blew and I need to replace it. But to go with @Chris ' suggestion of the Kicker 6.75-in. Sub and amp, I think I need a new head unit (not to mention the need for an input for devices). So I think I have a hefty upgrade between the Sub, Amp, and Head Unit.

That's a small hand.

Get the other one from the last link, not this one. This one is the old one.
