Driving without rear drive shaft for a short while

I need to have my driveshaft shortened, and would like to drive this Jeep around in the meantime without the rear shaft in. Several threads here and on other Jeep forums have informed that it seems to be perfectly safe. But here's my question:

Aside from removing the rear drive shaft and yoke, do I have to remove the rubber boot for the slip yoke? Do I need to put anything in place to protect the shaft coming out of the transfer case (NP231)? Or can I just drive around as-is, with the drive shaft & yoke removed, rubber boot in place, and bare splines exposed?

You'll be fine, no issues driving without the rear driveshaft whatsoever. Don't worry about covering the output shaft slip joint, it is sealed and won't leak.

That's what I've read and wanted to confirm. Thanks. Any concerns with the rubber boot bouncing around and striking the output shaft while its spinning? I know it won't damage the shaft / splines, but could it tear up the boot?

It will be okay. Be aware that front wheels are pulling, and that will affect handling. Don’t try to turn sharp on hard surface
