DuncLJ's Big Bolt-On Bonanza

Looks good, did you check to see how "tamper resistant" it gets after load it?

Yes, I did. You are correct in that you would need a fid to dig it out, and know what you are doing at the same time. 🍻

So I finally got the JCR trail doors that I ordered. They look and feel really solid, but are also very light.

Door latches and hinges are really solid. Only problem is that I only got 2 of the 4 hinges. Quick call to JCR took care of that. Another set is on the way.

No dings or dents in the doors, but the surface is pretty rough. They'll need a bit of prep work even for a decent rattle can finish.

But alas, I won't be getting to them anytime soon. My Army National Guard unit got called last night at 11pm to deploy out to support riot control. I spent all night on a helicopter heading to an undisclosed location. Then slept the rest of the night in a warehouse, now just waiting for orders.

I guess the Jeep will have to wait.

Back in action. I've been prepping and painting my doors. 200, 400, and then 600 grit sanding, primer, basecoat and clearcoat.
I got the factory paint color in rattle cans from
https://www.automotivetouchup.com/
It sprayed pretty nicely. It doesn't quite look factory, but still looks pretty good.

After lots of sanding and primer

Painted the inside gray to match the interior.

After lots of coats of Bright Silver Metallic and clear.

Gonna install door latches, hinges and factory mirrors today. With a few beer breaks in-between....

Had a busy week. Got activated by the Army National Guard to guard a Target shopping center for 3 days.

Briefing with Sacramento PD.

Survived the "Battle of Target".

I'm finally off orders and back home for now.

Got back to serious business with the Jeep. I'm burnt out.

Took a day off and installed the half doors. I'm exhausted. Its a "3 Beers in a Boot" night. 🍻 🍻🍻

I'm about to be a "Hazy Little Thing".

Installed the UCF engine skid today; pretty straightforward. It didn't come with any instructions, but the UCF website had a picture of it installed which pretty much said all it needed to about how to put it in.

It came with two sets of mount holes up front. I used the lower set of holes to take advantage of my MML, and give a bit more ground clearance.

I had to do a small amount of clearancing so the exhaust wouldn't contact the side.

The only other mod I did was replacing the supplied buttonhead bolts with flush mount hardware and countersinking the holes.

Came out pretty clean. Installed the Stahlbus oil drain kit too. Should make oil changes much easier.

Nothing to big lately, but I noticed when I installed my trail doors that the hinge bushings were pretty worn.

I replaced them with some Kentrol Delrin bushings.

IMG_20200615_190627.jpg

The bushings came with a tool to press out the old bushings. 3 of them popped right out, but 1 required the tool and vice grips to finally get it out.

The new bushings slid right in and the doors are much easier to remove and install.

I'm pretty sure I have a small heater core leak. I can smell coolant with the fan on, and a small amount of coolant drips out the condensation drain. I don't really feel like pulling the whole dash to replace the heater core right now.
I won't need the heater till at least November. So for now I installed a bypass loop on the hoses, and plugged the heater core in/outlets.

I installed a Pioneer double din stereo a few months ago. It functions perfectly, but I have been running the 4 speakers straight off the head unit. It only puts out 14w rms x 4 and 50w peak x 4. It sounds ok, but I knew an external amp would be better.
I got a Kenwood KAC-M3004 Compact 4 Channel Digital Amplifier

It puts out 50w rms x4 and 600w peak. I like it because it's compact (6.6" x 5.9") and fit under the steering column under the dash. I mounted it on a piece of MDF and bolted it to an existing hole on the steering column brace.

IMG_20200626_123915.jpg

I ran it to some 5 1/4" Kickers in the dash and some 6.5 Kickers in the sound bar.

I also run a Kenwood powered subwoofer that I fit into the factory subwoofer location in the console. I trimmed the plastic with a Dremel to make it fit perfectly.

It all sounds great, really loud and more importantly really clean. The new amp made a huge difference. The whole system blends together very nicely. Now I can hear the tunes while rolling down the freeway at 75 with the bikini top and half doors on.

Very nice! I've got a wireless CarPlay Kenwood Excelon head unit I am installing soon. I hear a lot of stuff needs to be modified to fit the double DIN. Guess I'll find out!

Thanks Chris, I saw on your build thread about the system you're going to install. Looks pretty impressive.

The double din install is not that difficult. I used this kit.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y493WRN/?tag=wranglerorg-20

The only tricky part is removing a section of plastic behind the bezel above the climate control. The instructions in the bezel kit show exactly what needs to be removed. I've read that some use a reciprocating saw or a Dremel to cut it. I used a small hacksaw blade. It cut through the thin plastic easily and is much easier to control so as not to cut through a wiring bundle.

Good luck, I'll be following along.
