Electrical issues when in gear

Voltage regulator.

I do not know if those are able to be changed of if you have to buy a new alternator.

The regulation of voltage is controlled by the ECU and the Battery temperature sensor (in the bottom of the tray).
There is no voltage regulator that can be replaced.

Positive ground to tipm box no damage

Touching negative on battery and grounds on body gives 4.50-4.55 volts all ground screws. Engine off but headlights and fog lights

0.02 no lights on hood ground

0.19 headlights off headlight ground

4.0 headlights on hood ground

And headlight ground

Not sure what you mean by this, but if you measure a voltage drop from the battery negative post to a grounded point that would indicate a bad negative battery cable.

So you are using a voltmeter with one lead attached to battery negative and the other lead attached to the engine ground stud. Do this with the engine running. If you get the 4.5 volts, this is a voltage drop telling you you are losing 4 volts through the cable. Take a set of jumper cables and jump from the battery negative to the engine and check again. If the problem is gone the negative cable is bad.

Thanks, I’ll give this a try. Sorry for confusing post. I’m not much of a mechanic but trying to learn.

Update

Engine running and meter attached to negative terminal and to engine ground . It shows 0.0 . I played around with moving it to a bare spot on that ground wire against engine still zero. Jumper cable connected to those give no difference

But

Negative post to ground on fire wall and negative to headlight ground

Engine running with heater on shows approximately 6.2 with but lights turned on 6.60 but soon dropped to 6.20-6.40 as heater blower slowed a lot. Blower and hvac turned off and just lights on shows 5.20 this is headlights and fog lights . Drops a little with fog lights off.

Negative post to any body ground I could reach

Should there be a ground from the battery to the body of the jeep or a ground from the engine to the body of the jeep because I’ve yet to see either of those two things. The battery is going to engine. The firewall is going to the hood but shouldn’t I have a ground from engine to body or battery to body?

I don't what understand what you are trying to prove by measuring the negative terminal for voltage. If you are verifying the ground is good you should be measuring resistance in ohms.

I’m not a mechanic but I find it weird there is volts between a battery negative and a ground

You measure ground by using the ohms setting on your vom, not volts.

Clearly there's a hot wire shorted to ground. Finding it is the trick.

I'd suggest getting eyes on that multifunction switch and connector.

This is where you need to methodically check each wire end to end... connectors to splice points to fuse boxes checking continuity and ohms. But a visual inspection of connections and possibly delooming the harness might make some of the issues obvious.

The two grounds that come out of battery. One of them is to engine near oil filter but the other has been run up underneath the alternator to what feels like the engine. The bolt for the ground on firewall is missing. Based on TJ grounds video it looks like it should be going here and not below alternator? Is that weird?

It would be normal to see voltage between the negative cable and the chassis/engine if the negative cable is removed from the battery and there are loads. It should go to zero, or very close to zero, once the negative cable is re-attached to the battery.

That is why I asked why he is looking for voltage instead of resistance.
If you have resistance in a cable, such as your black ground cable you will read a voltage between neg battery terminal to the starter post. It’s just another way of testing for a high resistance cable. Resistance is also a method, but not as reliable as voltage.

You also need a ground from battery/engine to the body.

All problems fixed. Dash lights going out. Blower weak. Headlights very dim or going out. Took the ground that was supposed to be from battery to firewall and removed it from engine below alternator and put back on firewall. It’s still missing a ground strap from engine to firewall that goes to hood I think. I’ll look about putting it on but the fix has completely resolved all issues. Thank you everyone for walking me through this. I learned a lot. Thanks
