Hi guys,

I just bought my first jeep and i allready have a problem.

As i bought my Wrangler in Germany where they are much more cheaper then in Portugal where I live, I need to import it.
so far no problems at all, only with the inspection they were looking for my engine ID but because of some rust it is barely readable.

I did some research and I found out that the 2.5 and the 4.0 Liter engines have some kind of a code with the date and 4/6 cilinder in it. (111HX11 or 111MX11)

Is that with the 2.4 the same? im just looking for some examples so i can try to identify what mine is saying.. maybe some pictures.. I dont know?

Hopefully someone can help me because at this point I have a Wrangler with no plates that I really want to drive.

Thanks in advance!!

i understand how the numbers of the 2.5 and 4.0 work.

but as the engine changed from AMC to Chrysler. i assumed the engine numbers would also be different..
and I cant find anything about 2.4 engine numbers...

Geez, I see how difficult it is to find anything. You may have already seen this link, but if not it's worth a shot to help with that first digit. Also posting to keep this near the top and hopefully someone will chime in.

Thanks! I appreciate it. But yeah, nothing to find on this engine. That’s why I am hoping that someone here has something. Maybe a picture of there own? I have no idea, I’m getting a bit desperate.

I found this, but I have no idea what this means.. not even the jeep dealer can help me.
They told me it needs to be on the block but that’s for 80% gone..

You mean a serial number? Or you need a block casting number? Try using sandpaper on the stamped serial number if you can't read it

I mean the unique number that is engraved in the block. i have tried sandpaper and everything. but it is for 80% "eaten" by rust.

That’s why I am hoping for an example. So maybe I can make something of it.

Are there all numbers? How many numbers? Number letter combination? At this point I have no idea..

You should post a picture of this number and describe it's location.

Here in the US there isn't a stamped number with part of the vehicle vin for your year. Just a block casting number and the build data number

It’s country of origin is Germany. Berlin.

I think that build data number is the one I need. Does anyone have an example of that?

The casting number I found:

This is from the FSM. Showing where the engine identification number is located on the 2.4L engines.

As an aside, since the 4.0 and 2.5 engine codes in the form 111MX11 have been mentioned...

These codes are not an engine ID number but a build date code. Mine as an example is 612MX30. The first digit is the year, second and third are the month and last two are the date. In my case the engine was built 30th Dec 96. This ties in with my TJ being built 2nd Jan 97.
The MX means the engine is a 4.0L engine with 8.8:1 compression ratio and multi-point fuel injection.

On the 4.0L engines for identification the last eight characters of the VIN are marked on the flat surface where the dipstick tube support is bolted to the block. The 2.5L may be similar, but I don't know for sure.

I know. but there is nothing readable there. I have two friends with th same engine and also on there engine is nothing to see.. rust screwed us over...
im just trying to find out if i can get the engine number from the VIN.

i'm checking a lot of video's online and all the chrysler engines from 2004 and up have the last 8 digits of the VIN as an engine number.
hopefully thats it.

If 04 up have the last 8 digits of the VIN as does my 97 I think it's a fair bet that what should be there on yours would be the last 8 digits.

If it was marked like on my 97, the number kind of looks like the output from an old dot matrix printer. I can imagine it wouldn't need anything much more than surface rust to obliterate it.

They quit doing the vin in 01. At least in the states

Yeah i also found somewhere that they stopped engraving in 2001. and the only thing they use is the sticker with the barcode that I allready found.
anyway, the inspection center says it needs to be on the block, the jeep dealer also.

the jeep dealer gave me a picture of what they found on the location but i just cant make anything out of it..
it looks like there was something, but maybe i just want to see it...

not really... thats why I am a bit desparate.. dont want to sell it and bring it back to germany tbh..
maybe I should just find someone that can print the last 8 digits of my VIN in there.. I have no idea.

Try asking for the supervisor at the inspection station and explain politely your situation? They might be able to help
