So I was thinking eventually going 35s but I’m aware it gets expensive. Currently on 33s 3speed auto. Going to upgrade soon to super 35, e locker, upgrade to better brakes, I have 3.73 gears should I upgrade the gearing right now? I’m just not sure when I’ll go with 35s and if I do what gearing will I need? Thanks

Tons of guys on here can help-

You are correct that you need to think comprehensively.

Brother I could've wrote this same post, same Jeep specs, similar goals (I plan to stay on 33s).

With the 32rh i don't know if it would be recommended to go deeper than 410 on the gears, I could be wrong for 35s tho. I'm currently looking for a part out set of Dana 30/Dana 35 with 410 gears to avoid the cost of regearing for my Jeep.

I had 4.56 and 32s on my 98' with 32rh trans. It felt powerful and sucked a lot of gas at 70 mph. I planned on going to 35s, but I ended up selling that Jeep. I think 4.56 would be good for 35s.

Yeah I bet your rpms were up there at 70 with 456s and 33s. I'm almost at 3000 rpm at 70 on 33s and 3.73s currently.

Considering you bought a vehicle without overdrive, I doubt you use the highway the most. But do you do it at all? That plays a big part in choosing gears. As it sits, you currently would be at 2500 RPM at 70 MPH. Not really that bad, especially for a 4.0. The problem is, at 3.73 gears, it's gonna be a bitch to get going. I'd be surprised if it got up to 70 without a fight too. Mine had 33's and 4.10's. It was less than optimal to say the least with a 2.4. I would concur with 4.56 gears. At 70 MPH, you'd be at 3000 RPM (which truthfully isn't terrible, and the 4.0 doesn't care, all it's gonna do is scream a little louder), however getting around town would be MUCH more desirable.

If I was mostly bouncing around town, 4.56/4.88 gears would be my outfit for a non-overdrive 4.0 TJ and take the beater Silverado on the highway.
