Lining up ducks for a water pump/thermostat job and was wondering what everyone is using for fan clutch removal?
I don't need $600 worth of professional grade equipment because fingers crossed I will never need them again but I want something that works like $600 worth of professional grade equipment.
I don't weld (life regret) so Fabing something up is pretty much out of the question

18in harbor freight pipe wrench & Walmart pry bar. Have helper put pry bar between 2 water pump bolts. Hit pipe wrench.

Take the extra time and remove fan shroud. Good excuse to buy the Milwaukee ratchet for the fan shroud.

I’ve always tapped them using an air chisel /hammer with a blunt bit against one of the hex flats.

I just grabbed a piece of old flat bar and made my own tool. Drilled 2 holes 2 1/4" from their centers and notched the bar to clear the pump shaft.

I had my son underneath with a 3/8 on one of the bolts for the clutch while I used a crescent wrench and hammer and tapped to brake it loose. If needed and possible you can use the handle of a floor jack for extra leverage.

And you don't need to remove the fan shroud.

On our 04 , 4.0 I used a 18" Rigid pipe wrench then 18" channelocks . I just routed the old serp belt tight around several pulleys then pulled it tight and vice gripped it to it's self, put the pipe wrench on , smacked it with my palm twice and it broke loose. Used the channys to unthread it off the pump.

I did break down and buy a decent pair of constant tension hose clamp pliers , much quicker than fighting with channelocks in tight places.

Rented both that O'Reilly had in their loan a tool program. The single adjustable one worked best. You have to take 2 water pump pulley bolts lose so the holder can grab onto them.

This is identical but different brand.

I just did the same thing yesterday and did not even know to loosen the bolts- just let it grab the heads- worked great but had to be careful not to let it slip- now I know why.

Learn something knew every day- today I found out you don’t scramble eggs in a toaster.

The fan clutch on the TJ is the easiest one I've ever done. Took the big Harbor Freight adjustable wrench, put it on the nut and smacked it with a BFH, came right off.

I second this process. Couldn't find my tool 1 time and have done it this way every time since. Even did it with a pipe wrench once.
