Full coverage for 12.5 wide tyres

Hi all, hope you're doing well

This topic has been covered a few times but nothing has been said that covers my specific question.

I'd like to run 33" tyres (or similar) on my tj and my state/country (Australia) requires full coverage/no poke. I'm looking at purchasing a set of bushwacker flat line fenders which are 6" wide (https://www.bushwacker.com/bushwacker-10920-07-flat-style-fender-flares-front-and-rear).

Would i get full coverage if i ran 4.5" of backspacing, 0 offset and a 33x12.5 tyre? If not, do you guys know of combinations that would be full coverage? I'd like the tyre to still be somewhat wide, I'm basically looking for the absolute widest tyre i can run before it starts to poke. 295/75R16 caught my eye and is only 11.6 wide so i'd be saving almost an inch.

I just barely get full coverage on a 315/75R16 using the 6.25" wide fender flare extensions on 3.75" net backspacing (16x8 rim).
What width of rim are you running?

Hmm ok, thanks for your input. I was looking at getting 15/8 wheels but have not bought them so open to switching it up

15x8 on 4.5" of backspacing should have the tread covered on 6" flares with a bit of room to spare.

At that backspacing, you may need to add a washer to the steering stops. I went with 3.75", so I don't have that issue.

I assume the law refers to the tread, and not the sidewall? Most American laws go by tread coverage.

I believe the law refers to the sidewall, if you were to drop a piece of string from top of the fender down it shouldn't touch any tyre. Although, unless a cop pulled me over and wanted to give me a bad day i don't think they're that pedantic so having the tiniest amount of poke should be fine

So if you want to cover the entire tire, use this math.

The axle width of a TJ is 60.5". The body width of a TJ is 59". With tires mounted on 15x8 with 4.5" of backspacing, the tire centerline will be 1/2" inboard of the WMS on each side. With a 12.5 wide tire, you would have 72" of width from sidewall to sidewall.

The body of a TJ is 59 inches wide. So to cover exactly to the edge of the sidewall, you would need 6.5" flares to get to 72".

Alternatively, you would have 0.5" of sidewall poke on each side with the 6" flares.
