Gear pattern assessment

I'm at 15 in lbs preload, . 005 backlash and here's the pattern. This looks close, but it's been more than 2 decades since I set up gears and I need another set of eyes!

Also, it's interesting setting up this Eaton E-locker. I'm shimmed at .010 on the non ring gear side, with zero shims on the ring gear side.

A lot less paint and a lot more pressure when turning the ring gear. As it sits, it is deep. Try taking out 5 thou and see what happens. Take a pic of the pinion as it sits in the housing. It will have the opposite pattern...i.e. if it looks shallow, then it's deep.

What gears are you using, what axle, and what does the pinion look like?

Revolution gears and it's a HP30. I'm done for the evening, but here's the best shot I can get of the pinion tonight. I'll pull the carrier tomorrow and get something better.

Then how did you change depth? Shims next to pinion head bearing?
If I'm following correctly, I pulled .005 from the pinion shims. They were at .069 and I went to .064. Maybe a dumb question, but what tool do I use to set the outer pinion bearing? It's the only bearing left that's a setup bearing.

No need to use anything setup on the outer bearing. Drive the race in and use the new bearing.

I just reread this post. What do you mean you pulled from the pinion shims? If you're using the slinger, where are the other shims coming from?

Mike is trying to figure out where the shims you are adjusting located? And no need for a setup bearing on the outer.

Mike is trying to figure out where the shims you are adjusting located? And no need for a setup bearing on the outer.

The setup I'm using is exactly like the image below. Starting from the inner side:

- Stock inner oil slinger
- Replacement Inner Timken Bearing
- Replacement Inner Timken Race
- Replacement Omix Oil baffle
- Preload shims (set at .0064)
- Replacement Outer Timken Race
- Replacement Outer Timken Bearing
- Stock outer oil slinger
- New Spicer pinion seal
- Stock yoke, using the stock washer and pinion nut (top is ground for repeated installation and removal)

In terms of what I adjusted, I was referring to the pinion preload shims. Those are now at .064. The only shims on the Eaton E Locker carrier side is .010 on the non ring gear bearing side. There are no shims on the ring gear bearing side. Since I'm on the tight side of .005 backlash, I believe I could remove .001 to .002 on the pinion preload shims, which should help put me little better on backlash and pattern. Am I thinking this correctly?
