We are thinking about buying a gokart or something similar for my 11 year old son. Any brands you would recommend? Anything to avoid? Just looking for any advice.

Thanks

We had several of them when we were kids. Look for one with a variable pully belt system instead of just a clutch & chain if they are still around. It accelerates much faster and does better on hills. It is like having a variable speed transmission.

We're looking at one of those mini Jeeps which are classified by the sellers as a go kart. My boys are 9 and 6 and we have 4 acres and a gated neighborhood for them to terrorize.

The one at tractor supply is by Massimo, and there's a Coolster as well, both 125cc 4 strokes and pretty similar. My wife leans towards the Coolster because it has a roll bar and shoulder belts. I like it because it has a chain guard which will help when they drive it in the dirt and rocks on our land.

Avoid being like my neighbor and making one out welded rebar, a lawnmower engine, and a centrifugal clutch from a chainsaw.

I had a homemade kart as a kid- 5hp centrifical clutch…..it was the BEST! My first experience with death wobble was on that kart- long downhill run 30-40mph… had to go home a clean my shorts😯

It is a bit of a trip down to Bell Buckle, but Twin Fountains re- opened recently under the name of Music City Kartplex. They have nice modern karts if you just want to test the waters. I believe they sell karts too.

I've been to K1 Indoor with my daughter and is a lot of fun. We usually go on Tuesday when it's buy 2 get one free.
