Got a couple kinks in my winch cable...time to go synthetic?

was thinking of replacing my cable with this...its only like $25 per 10 feet...is that too good to be true/good?

For only $50 more I'd get this known quality 100' package from TRE which includes the Safety Thimble which is a much safer and effective connector than a plain hook is. I'm running the same thing on my TJ, I've been running the Safety Thimble and synthetic 3/8" rope for probably 14 years now. You can't beat that combination. The Safety Thimble sells for $80-$100 alone so you're getting it at a good discount.

My last order of that rope was orange, it sure makes it easier to see when in use. x2 on going with the rope from 4lowparts. I've got the same orange rope with the safety thimble. Light weight, easy to see, safe, and doesn't cut your hands when you're trying to use it.

Jerry...I've been a cable guy for over 35 years. Just went to synthetic about a month ago to give it a try. The rope sleeve you are talking about. Is that the sleeve at the hook end of the winch rope? What problems can it cause?
 
Never really never thought much about cable until the hook came loose and it came barreling back and smacked the windshield right in front of my face. The next day I had the windshield replaced and ordered 100 ft of 3/8 from Orrs Offroad. He is a friend so I order from him. + 100 feet of Amsteel for $250 free shipping to AK isn't a bad price. So $25 per 10 feet of proven rope

Yes it's that sleeve that comes with some synthetic ropes. I can't explain it as well as @mrblaine did so I will just quote him....

"What makes them bad is they aren't thick enough to protect the line from sharp rocks and the force of the line wears through the guard in seconds and allows the line to get damaged to the point of failure.

If you are one of those that believes that self recovery winches are just that, then you will do much better because the non moving anchor point will do very well to protect your line.

If you are one of those that likes to winch other folks when the need arises, the line moving through the abrasion guard will kill the line in a sharp rock situation.

The astounding part is just how small the load on the line has to be in order to abrade it to failure.

With the right rock, the load against the abrasion guard of as small as 300 lbs. will part the line."

Here is Ricky's youtube channel. Arrow to the right and watch Abrasion 1, 2, and 3 in order. The key thing to keep in mind is just how small the load is comparatively to what we do with our winches and just how fast the line wears through the abrasion guard with just 300 lbs of load on the line.

It has gotten to the point where Ricky has difficulty selling a winch line without the "abrasion" guard on it because folks lack the capacity to do any critical thinking and instead just want to believe bullshit. We've been removing and cutting the nylon sleeves off of winch lines for at least 10 years due to all the problems we've had with them and trying to get folks to understand why they are bad is just about impossible. Those videos should have 1000's of views and they have less than a 100.

To this day the specification collectors want to know the breaking strength of the Safety Thimble.

Um, hello? Any body home? The rope goes around the eye. The thimble can't break. The rope will break first so it doesn't matter because the point of failure is not the thimble, it is the rope.
