We are visiting the Big Island this week.
We paid an extra $550 for a Jeep
The rental lady told us we could take it OffRoad (which has NEVER happened before).
They had about 10 Wranglers available. But they were all basic Sahara Editions,
I picked the blue one. It has about 36,000 miles and is in ‘fair’ condition. The last Rubicon was SO much nicer

This is a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sahara
I think this Jeep has the standard
3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine
I’m not impressed with this engine at all. The 2.0 Turbo was much better.

I’ll try to get some better pics tomorrow.

We'll be in Kauai end of February, and have a jeep rented. Hoping we can get a 2 door. I've rented TJ's and Jk's in past trips. I'm bias, but feel the TJ to be the peppiest.

When we did the big island years ago we went down Waipi'o Valley road in our rental jk and also up to the NASA telescopes. Both were very fun adventures. Waipi'o valley road had a water crossing that was fun, a bit unnerving on the way back because it started pouring and I felt the jeep shift in the current, but fun.

One of the roads in Waipio is actually a stream and runs in the stream bed for about a quarter mile.

Hill has several warnings

The Gypsy Guide scared my wife a little:
“Steepest Road in North America”
“25 degree slope with one section at 40%”

I put the Jeep in 4 low, transmission in 1 and the Downhill Descent ON
It was damn slow
I took the downhill descent off about 1/3 of the way down

Horses were down by the beach. We gave one an apple and an orange

Crossed the river, but the waterfall trail said it was closed.

That hill was no joke. We had the hill decent on as well. Glad you made it down there.

The horse ate the orange and came back for more. It slimed my daughter’s hand between bites.

We went to Papakolea Green Sand Beach. We can discuss the legality/morality of that if necessary. I am confident that I did NO additional damage to the environment,

I think the main issue it people creating new trails to avoid washed out or rutted paths. Some these paths were 6’ feet deep!

The beach is pretty cool. The sand is a olive color. It gets the color from a green gemstone called Peridot (Olivine)

This is our last night at an Airbnb outside Pahoa. It’s a small one room ‘cabana’ with an outdoor kitchen and bathroom.
It is literally built on the lava field from the 2018 eruption!
