How is this threaded rod supposed to be attached inside door?

My outside door handle stop opening the driver door. I took the panel off and this is what I found it inside today.

I know this threaded Rod should be attached to something I assume maybe this three-sided metal square cap looking thing with the holes in the side?

does someone have a picture, a good diagram or can recreate it with sock puppets to tell me exactly how that threaded Rod is supposed to attach?

Yes. Threaded into that.

These are from some half doors in working on, but should be similar, if not the same.

Fixed! Thanks for the pics.. didnt seen like the rod would stay in the clip so I put a couple of zip ties around it and left the panel off to see how it goes for a few days..
