HVAC box acting strange

I now own a 97 TJ. I purchased it recently and love to fix all of the little issues before they become large problems. My question involves my heater controls, I searched the forum but didn't find this issue. When I turn on the defrost it seems to blow ok on low but as soon as I turn up the fan speed a door slams shut and won't let air come out anywhere. I can turn it back on low and repeat overtime. I have checked vacuum lines and they seem to be all hooked up.

Is there a door behind the fan?

Eventually, yes. It basically splits after the fan into two chambers...one with the heater core, the other with the evaporator.

Look in the resources section. Download the FSM. There's a diagram of the HVAC box.

My guess is you're eventually going to have to pull the dash to remove the HVAC box to completely open it to fix the issue.

But if you pull the fan you might, just might be able to see something.

Or pull the cowl and look down through the hole on the passenger side.

You may have a snapped arm controlling one of the doors inside the hvac. The arms are moved by the three vacuum solenoids on the drivers side under the dash. You need to be something of a contortionist to be able to actually see them. Even more so if you want to get an arm up there to have a wiggle and see if Ny if the arms are loose

It sounds like the defrost flap is possibly loose from the actuator. When you turn up the fan speed, it is blowing it closed.

Bleepin Jeep has a good video that shows how the blower, flaps and actuators work. It helped me trace down an actuator issue.

I downloaded the blow up of the hvac box from the resource section and replaced the heater blend door actuator, part number 17910.01 and got it replaced. Works great now. Thanks Mac

Sorry for some short questions and answers but it seems like every couple of minutes my phone is doing another virus scan and have to start over.
