I think that salvage Jeeps are the only way to buy anymore

I'm on my 2nd Salvage title Rubicon project. If you know what you are looking for, you can get more Jeep for the money than you would ever believe.

You can't get a clean 06 Rubi for 12k and sell it for 16 typically, but you can get one for 9300 and sell it for 13,500. I just did.

You have 2 factions -

1. Repair cost

2 .typical straightening out an older vehicle cost.

Avoid rust and frame damage, and if you aren't sure, ask for help.

i grew up around repaired wrecks, so I'm pretty familiar with what to avoid.

Front end licks on TJ's drive the drive shaft into the transfer case.

Side licks warp the axles and brake the plastic sway bar links.

Salvage Jeeps are only a deal if you can fix them for cheap, and know exactly what to look for and what is wrong. While I commend your skill with these things, most people don't have that ability. I've looked into fixing some salvage vehicles, and have a few friends that have done it. Some were successful, others got burned, badly. Many of these places are not upfront about what is broken or damaged, or even what happened to the vehicle. Many are flood vehicles.

Some places like Co-Part are also huge rip-offs. Offering salvage vehicles for prices barely lower than clean title functioning vehicles. I worked in auto insurance previously, and dealt with many of these salvage companies and their games. No thanks.

I apologize. I have not read but about half the thread some time ago. But I'm wondering if there is any difference or benefit from having a theft salvage title with no accidents? I came across this tonight:

The reason for the salvage is theft. But with no accidents listed on its carfax. I think including during the theft.

I guess the benefit - if its true - is that the Jeep was never wrecked.

I had a 4x4 stolen once and they blew the motor. Which makes me wonder what damage could have been done to the drive train in a theft though.

Imho hes asking a bit much. I think 120k on an LJ is probably at the top end for a non-salvage Jeep. And there are no pics so no one knows. But I'm not completely sold on salvage titles. And maybe there is a better market for them than i would have thought. And maybe its a bit of a salvage unicorn in that it was never wrecked? Idk.

I think if your say only wheeling with your jeep. And like trailering it to the 4x4 areas. And only using it like a fun toy (no disrespect intended). Salvage probably doesn't matter.

I also see a several fixed salvage title Jeeps up for sale in the socal area from time to time. But they always seem to be priced at or near a nonsalvage Jeep.

Which confuses me. As i would not own a salvage title vehicle without a substantial discount.

Am i missing something?

With everything that can be wrong with a tj, a salvage title is the last thing I'd look at. That's just me.

I may be "spinning " your post, but that's exactly why I look at them pretty close for my project build/sell TJs.

Right off the bat , the typical used TJ needs nearly every u joint and bushing replaced, shocks, track bars, seat covers and 20 small things...so getting in them discounted keeps me right side up.

I paid 22,000 to beat the system on a low mileage Rubicon, and it had a delapidated lift, bad tires and just tons of small , weird stuff, plus things I created like new calipers since I didn't flush the system before pads, etc. The truth on that was it was not a 22,000 Rubicon, I fell for the odometer and cool look. I didn't know what I was doing.

I will never get close to all my money out, so I'm enjoying my cost.

At the same time, and @Boogieman is a good example, you don't have to buy a salvage title to get a deal.

Tread cautiously is my advice...used or salvaged ..you have to know what you are looking for.

Other than that though, no problems in the slightest. On the long crank issue. Have you tried cycling your key to the run position for a few seconds and then off a few times before trying to start it yet? Your "long crank" problem sounds suspiciously like a lack of fuel pressure at the fuel rail.
