An XJ would be great for what you’re describing. I’ve had three and miss them. Great vehicles.I've been considering scooping up an XJ, cause around here they're affordable and seem to be not too far off from what i'm used to. Plus they're basically the cousin of the TJ right? Could be a good commuter and winter vehicle here in the mountains, maybe even a touch warmer!
A stock red CJ-2A would be my choice, it's what I learned to drive in back in the mid-70's.

And no, do not ruin it by building it up. Old jeeps are just too cool, rare, beautiful when 100percent stock.
