NorthRidge 4x4 here in CO will sometimes have a $900 special. Its rare, but they do offer it every now and then. I dont know their reputation though...
 
not taking anything away from this shop but $1200 - $1300 is going non-sale rate
 
That's over $1000 for labor!
Now you think about it from a technicians standpoint...assuming only $100 an hour which is way lower than most shop rates, if you can get a good gear setup within 5 hours of labor on each axle you are doing extremely good or you are extremely lucky to get a good setup with the first assembly try. Usually it may take 2 or 3 setup assemblies, measuring backlash and checking pattern, then making a shim change, rechecking backlash and pattern each time. This all takes time, and many times a job quoted at 5.5 may actually take closer to 8.

Reputable shops in the same area as the shop in the OP are asking $1250 OTD for drive in service all year long and they aren't in the business of losing money.
