Improve Stock Sound System

What is the best way to improve the sound on the stock system? I want to keep my original radio head, but open for speaker and sub ideas. I have been searching the threads, and I like the idea of putting the sub under/attached to the rear seat. Any recommendations on the models of speakers and sub I should be looking at? Thanks
 
Set budget, call crutchfield sales support, install parts! Thats the easiest solution…

Favorite mod to my factory stereo is the cigarette lighter Bluetooth FM converter so I can run Spotify. Second was the kicker sub replacing the factory unit in the center console. Third was infinity components in the front dash speaker area. Getting those tweeters up higher is noticable.

Thanks. My 2004 Rubi, didn't come with the sub in the console, but the screen is there. I was debating putting one in the console, but like the idea of under the seat. Not unless in the console is a better option.
 
After building many permutations of audio build outs in the TJ, the single most effective upgrade is to convert the front 5.25" coaxials into components and relocating the tweeter to the dash or a-pillar.

Adding an under seat subwoofer should be added after the fact, that upgrade is not even close to getting a decent component set up front.

You should get a 4 channel amplifier to power those and the overhead speakers in the pods.

After that I would spend money on an under seat sub.

This could be a difficult build depending on your skillset but this forum will get you through it.

Look at BLAM Relax as an superb entry level speakers. Their high end stuff costs more than our TJ and wins legit car audio contests.

No need for Crutchfield if you have this forum. Plenty of good audio guys hear to walk you through a build. DM me if you need any assistance.

Get a high quality/powered amp with speakers, if you want to keep the crappy stock head unit. Get a 8" sub (minimum) if you want good sound with any type of music. I went one step further with mine.
p.s. Crutchfield is your best bet and free installation gear with most stuff they sell.

There are several threads on this. I started with an amp under the rear seat and was going to add a sub there also. But it took up what little room was there, so I changed to subs in the console.
I am not an audiophile at all, but wanted better sound.
I kept the stock head unit also because it looks like it belongs.
I went with the Soundstream Picasso Nano 5 channel amp mounted under the steering column, upgraded speaker in the dash and soundbar and added two subs in my console.
It sounds great (to me) and looks bone stock.
Console mod here. If I was going to do it over again, I'd make the console sides a little more rigid by adding some Luan to the sides and clamping it with epoxy.

@KY_SimpleMan, what Skrelnik describes is roughly the approach I took. I kept my original head unit too. My notes are here.
