First time setting up gears but fairly experienced wrencher. So I’m in the process of installing 513 revolution gears in my 2005 TJ with a stock Dana 30, in place of the 373. The old setup that was in the jeep was only making contact on the very very toe of the ring gear so I started with a blank slate. My current setup has 7thou backlash and is giving me these patterns. I am using setup bearings, yes I know some of you don’t like that but I’ll deal minor adjustments later. Not sure if I need to add pinion shims or take away. Any advice would be appreciated.

Looks too deep to me too. Otherwise its sitting in good. For a first timer starting from "0" your looking great.👍

Second set no race shims. Let me know if I should go even more shallow. I appreciate the help.View attachment 226652

This is starting to look better! But you certainly do not have enough pressure on the gears when making the contact pattern, shouldn't be any paint left where the gears touch. Have someone wedge a board under the ring gear and re-run the above pattern.

Mike at the BFG Garage has a good way to do this, use a rag/glove/etc to apply pressure on the ring year while you spin the pinion:

Tighten up your backlash and rerun the pattern. Apply pressure like shown in the video.

Edit: you did that as I was typing. You still look too deep. Maybe by only three or five thou.

Now I have a new issue I would like your opinions on. Im running out of time as this is also my daily now that i sold the motorcycle... Im currently setting up the ford 8.8 with the revolution gears also. The previous ring gear was very firmly pressed on the carrier and hard to get off. After getting it off I went to install the new ring gear and it literally dropped into place. I can rather freely spin the ring gear while it is on the carrier, I went ahead and installed it as I cannot call Revolution until tomorrow. But what do you guys thing of this its probably a few thousandths off. I checked runout by setting it up on the back of the pinion and it was 1 thou total. So then I was wondering if the ring gear maybe wasn't centered so I set it up to put the dial indicator on the side of the gear so when I rotate it I can see if its not centered or out of round. I got a total of 5 thou difference. Do you guys think this is to much or should I run it.
