Is the TJ starter different for manual transmission vs automatic transmission?

I have 1997 Wrangler TJ with a manual transmission. Is the starter for this the same as the starter for an automatic trans?

I guess they are the same for the 1997. In late TJs they are not interchangeable.

So I bought a new starter and installed it on a 2001 jeep wrangler automatic. It’s a little noisy is there a difference between starters for automatics and starters for a manual transmission?

Normally they are different.

Yeah, in my Jeep's transition (manual to auto) the starter had to swap. This is a 2006, so I can't speak for all years - but my 2002 Nissan daily driver also had a different starter for the auto vs the manual options.
