It’s all they have

My wife is a very kind, smart woman. She is a beautiful person.

Not sure why she married me, but I digress.

Recently someone we know and love was at my truck door ranting about how much more they knew than their cancer surgeon about their treatment.

I came home with my usual “I’m sitting there trying to write his check and he’s going on and on and on about this …..blah blah blah. “


She said something to the effect of , “Andy. Stop. It is ALL he has.” In other words, for some people their feelings, their need to be right , their platform or limited knowledge of a hobby is all they have.

It woke me up. For the first time in my life, I realized for many people they desperately need that time to express their feelings.

He has no higher education, no retirement, no real house, no savings, no dad, poor health, drug dependence and scars. Along with a tired body from decades in the trades. He has no relationship with a higher power, no hope and no future plans, here or after.

It taught me a whole new appreciation for those less fortunate….whatever their position is, it may be all they have. Don’t take it away.

Sometimes all we want is for someone to listen to us and hear us. More often than not we love to talk, but how often do we take the time to pause and listen to others? It's a skill, one we could all use some practice with from time-to-time.

In situations like this I always like to say a prayer and ask that the Lord would give me the ability to hold my thoughts captive and obedient to Christ, and that I would always respond in the Spirit and never in the flesh.

Andy, your wife has great insight. I told my wife about "that's all they have", and it explains a certain family member of ours to a T. Hopefully, using this frame of reference in future encounter will be less stressful/adversarial.

It's ok for you to vent about your employees to your beautiful smart wife.It's healthy to do things that separate their reality from yours.

She has been hearing me vent for 3 decades. Called bull when needed. She balances me out, keeps me in check. She sees so much I don’t.

Perspective can be a humbling experience, if you let it. If we're on here spending money on our, in some cases multiple, Jeeps, we're already better off that so many others!
