It works! Revving the nuts off a TJ ended up giving it way more power (no more carbon buildup)

Nope, it works well on gasoline engines too, especially well in fact.

Carbon gets built up from driving our engines too conservatively and the easiest cheapest (free) way to get rid of it is via the old Italian Tune-Up. That consists of nothing more than repeatedly revving the engine HARD to HIGH rpms repeatedly which blows the carbon build-up out the exhaust. Best done on the highway to put it under a load. Can take a day or two depending on your local traffic conditions.

For those who think running the engine ultra-conservatively and never accelerating hard or to high rpms is how to keep it running well "forever", that's not the case. It needs to be driven hard to high rpms once in a while to prevent this problem.

As a 16 year-old kid I watched the Corvette specialist at my local Chevy dealer repeatedly revving a 427 Corvette, to rpms that were high enough that it kinda scared me lol. Once he was done I asked him why he was doing that. He explained the same thing as above, that most Corvette owners drove their 'Vettes too conservatively and then after a while they'd bring it in and complain it wasn't running well. All that was required to restore the engine back to full performance was what he was doing. Of course how do you really push a 427 hard enough to prevent that without getting lots of tickets lol.
 
In the 1980,s you could get a water injection kit, it sprayed small amounts of aerosol into the intake, this apparently improved performance.
If you have ever driven on a misty morning and noticed how well your engine is running then its the same principal I presume?
I never see one but heard lots of talk about them.

I've used it, but it's apparently mostly water so I'm not sure it's worth the cost or not...

The one I am talking about was a fixed kit sort of like the upper cylinder lube kit for leaded gas cars using unleaded gas but sucks in water vapor/mist not lube.

Is this still a good idea with a worn or suspected worn engine?

I read you can Idle a modern petrol engine as long as you want with no ill side affects, this after I once started my DD on a flat battery late one afternoon and left it running outside my house to put a charge in it, woke up the next morning in a panic when I realized I had left it running for 13 hours! Beer does that you lol
 
What exactly did you do? Sit still in neutral & rev it up? Drive it in a gear that would give you that RPM? Add water to what? What were you trying to accomplish & where did you hear about it? And finally, if it took 20 minutes how could it be done in seconds?

My TJ has 65,000km on it. I drove all through the hills up were I live, trying to blow out the carbon deposits. Revving the absolute tits off it... up long straight incline roads, holding each gear to 4500rpm or even until rev limiter. Within 10 minutes of driving like this, it just instantly changed. There was far more noticeable power,... any carbon in there had clearly been blown out. I initially thought it was my super aggressive tires keep the jeep slow, but nope..... it was carbon build up. Makes sense, I suggest you try it.

This really works, no joke. Its has heaps more power.
 
@JohnJ78 - thanks for being a good sport! We're clearly having some fun with this but there's is some truth to the self cleaning that the rpms, tempsand pressure provides if you have a engine that has lived a somewhat pampered life.

Throwing a brick on the pedal and walking away for 20 minutes probably isn't the way to go about it, but its a good reason ( at least an excuse!) to get after it every once and a while! With my engines I'm a firm believer in the break'me in the way you want to ride'em philosophy, and if engineers didn't want you revving that high, they wouldn't have put the rev limiter there!😉
 
This was MUCH more of an issue back when leaded gasoline was being used. The deposits that stuff would leave on the tops of pistons and on the valves was crazy. We used to chip it off with a hammer and a plastic or wooden chisel. This would often cause the rings to stick in the grooves as well.
With unleaded gasoline, this is much less of a problem. The unleaded motors I've taken apart after over 100k and more miles were all fairly clean, and spotless if you compared them to the days of old leaded gas.
I'm just not sure how much of a problem this is these days, but I do agree, motors should not be babied, but used throughout their rpm range.
 
X 2, still an issue even with unleaded.
My favorite method is driving HARD up a mountain pass like Rabbit Ears or Eisenhower flat out in 3rd for minutes.

The biggest issue is with vehicles not driven much. I have only put 3100 miles on my 81 Corvette in 22 years of ownership. Maybe 300 miles a year on my TR6 and I am lucky if I put 2000 miles a year on the TJ.

I miss the beautiful TR-6 I bought in 1972. A kid talked me into selling it to him and he totalled it within a couple months. 😭

Ouch! Probably going to sell it on BAT this spring. Unlike my TJ it spent it's entire life in Houston till 2014 (got out before the flooding)
