I would say to stay away from the import 1/4 ton market, they are a lot of money for what you actually get. Get a used 1/2 ton with a larger cab, more towing/hauling capacity, and more power.
Keep the truck I have or go into debt for a new one?

I think you are right. I have not thought of it that way. A 3 year loan isn't worth an engine upgrade.
Depends on your needs.. I Bought a $43k Silverado a few years back and about had a heart attack, but it's paid now. I needed something that could tow a camper, tow the TJ on a car carrier, & handle all the fun stuff my family likes to do. I don't regret it. No way I would have been able to tow this kind of stuff with a V6 import. But, if you don't have a need for the engine & towing capacity, stay outta debt!
