We were in the area for a summer end family trip and hit a couple of spots.
My son dipped a line in Montgomery reservoir, which is the start of the Wheeler lake trail. We got there too late to do the trail, but we’ll be back again.
The trail starts thru that valley to the right.
Earlier that day we went to the public range in Keystone. It’s clean, everyone we saw was taking care of their messes. A nice thing to see. Garrett ran a few rounds thru the Mini14, and a bunch more in his Savage Rascal .22
The next day the ladies came up and we went up above Montezuma to part of the Deer Creek trail. It was pretty easy, I kept it in 2wd all the way to the top. I had my daughter Norah do some more driving on the easier parts.
The views are great from up here, and there is still some snow for the kids to play around in.
This trail joins up with several others, and we chose to go down the Middle fork of the Swan river so we could do a little more fishing at the end. It’s a bit more challenging with some steeper washed out sections. My wife drove thru that part so she could get used to messing with the new 241 t-case. She really liked the slow control.
And we saw some mountain goats, just like the good old trail book said.
After you drop back below tree line, it’s really pretty with some good spots to camp, and a few places you could fish.
At the end of the trail, you go thru an old mining dredge area of the river. We found a nice spot to fish as the sun went down.
And a cool sunset shot on the way back going past Dillon reservoir.
It was a good trip before the kids are back in school. I can’t believe it’s already mid August!
