I believe it is the vent line for your front differential.

Breather hose. It’s doing what it needs to do right there.

Differential breather hose. Connects to the top of your front differential.

Make sure it is actually connected to the front diff.

And not cracked, checked or broken. 20 year old hose just crumbles.
