Honestly, don't want to.
My brothers and sisters in arms are still family...the good kind of family that will fly across the world to help you out of a jam or just celebrate with you.
Nobody in the civilian world has ever matched the dedication to the mission (even ill conceived missions), unquestioned support, straightforward communication, and willingness to jump in to help on even the shittiest, lowliest jobs. AND the complete lack of acceptance for substandard performers-I miss the shit out of telling someone they're a POS and having 5 other dudes look at them and go, "He's right, you are a piece of shit."
There's a lot that I don't miss about the Navy, but I miss the shit out of the people.

I'm with you. I go to the grocery or Home Depot and see somebody with a vet's hat or patch and I go right up and talk to them. There's no b.s., just like a couple of old buddies saying, "Hi." I did this once and the guy's wife said to him, after I walked away, "Who was that?" He replied, "One of my brothers."

On a different note, I can't believe the Navy is mothballing 17 ships because they can't find crew. How many unemployed USN Vets are sleeping on the street every night. Come on, Navy, if only 10% of those guys is able, you would still be turning them away after manning 17 ships. And they aren't even combatant ships, they are MSC! I'm 74 and I could stand bridge watch on any MSC ship.

I thought exactly the same thing. Personally, I missed enough of my family's life when it mattered, but if my wife wasn't so sweet and so hot, I'd jump all over the Merchant Marine or MSC bandwagon.
It's a good life, sure isn't boring!
It's just not worth the trade off for me anymore.

I retired in 07, very thankful I didn't have to see the changing mindsets or deal with medical leave for PVT Snuffy to get a set of fake tits sewn on.

Annual briefing were long enough then, I can't imagine how many they have to sit in on now. You probably can't even make jokes during Sexual Harassment.

Yep, I'm happy I got out before it got REAL stupid. Hell the changes I saw between 1978 & 2006 were bad enough. I would have been a private again I'm sure due to me not complying with the new "rules"...
I had enough pissy soldiers who complained about me in Iraq it was just plain funny.

I was the BN Safety Officer even they did away with the weekly safety briefing. Thank goodness.

standing there telling fools not to do dumb shit was the biggest waste of my time.

Was always off the mindset to treat them like adults. they act like adults. when they get caught doing dumb shit. punish that one. not the entire formation.

Otherwise you have a Formation of Roughly 500 warrants bouncing Beach balls during a mass briefing. Seen it, Funniest ever watching an O-4 screaming at a formation about a beach ball.
