Missing fuel filter on a RHD 2001 TJ Sport

Hi Guys - 2001 TJ Sport in otherwise excellent condition for its age. Its a RHD (Aussie spec so has the Dana 44 rear).

Call me crazy but... I can't find the fuel filter. I have traced the fuel lines from the top of the tank all the way to the engine bay and the fuel injectors and for the life of me I cannot find it. They are normally above the rear wheel strapped in near the frame rail unless I have read that wrong.

Any thoughts? Is it possible that someone has deleted the filter in the past or are they well hidden for some reason on the RHD spec vehicles?

Nope. You have a fuel sock in the tank and that is it. If it makes you feel better, us LHD have the same issue.

if you really wanted to, you could drop the fuel tank and replace the combo fuel pressure regulator/filter assembly on top of the fuel pump basket.. additionally there is a sock on the inlet of the pump inside the tank too. but in all honestly the "fuel filter" was designed as a lifetime filter and I wouldn't be surprised if you begin having starting issues shortly after replacing it. its best to just leave it alone until you have a issue.

the amount of time and effort you would go through just to do so it would be almost as cost effective to just replace the pump vs just buying the fuel pressure regulator alone. im on my 3rd fuel pump assembly in 2 years since I figured id do some preventative maintenance by replacing it. Delphi let me down twice and im suspicious the recent Bosch may be starting to give me issues as well.

Id honestly just leave the fuel pump assembly & regulator/filter as is and do it if/when you have a fuel pump issue.

I have had to replace a Delphi in my Tacoma after a year. Very upsetting, and unbelievable for a pump that costs double/triple an Amazon China pump. I am about to change out my TJ's, but I guess i'll wait. My skid bolts are going to need to be cut.

in my old rusty truck I didnt see many options for fuel pumps and had to go the Delphi route as well. though at the time it was before I had issues with Delphi in the jeep. ive intentionally not welded the truck bed floor panel back in place over the fuel tank because im sure I will need to pull it in a parking lot again. im not interested in paying to have it towed back home where the cutoff wheel is located just to pull the pump again. the rubber bed mat is doing just a fine job covering the hole up as is.
