For as long as I can remember I've been a huge fan of the Western genre of movies. I got hooked on them when I was younger watching re-runs of Zoro and other stuff. Then in my late teens and early twenties I became infatuated with Clint Eastwood and the Spaghetti Westerns, as well as all of his other Westerns he made.

This seems to be a dying genre as Hollywood doesn't make Westerns anymore unfortunately. I understand this as well, as the audience has to be slim.

However, this got me to thinking, are there any Western movies still being made that are worth watching and aren't completely unbelievable or terrible?

The last modern Western I saw on the big screen was True Grit and 3:10 to Yuma which I very much enjoyed.

Any recommendations would be appreciated (y)

My two favorites westerns as of now are lonesome dove series, and open range.

But I have missed a lot of the old ones so am watching them now.

Just started “The Searchers” last night. Looking forward to watching this whole list have been going through the order.

@Chris Have you watched justified? Modern western but a lot of fun.

I'm going to save that list. I've seen a number of those, but not all of them. Still, some I'll need to re-watch just for fun.

I love the Lonesome Dove series, definitely one of my favorites. Robert Duvall has long been one of my favorite actors. I'll have to watch Open Range though as I haven't seen it.

I have indeed watched Justified in it's entirety, that was one of my favorite shows on TV when. I absolutely love Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins, both absolutely perfect for those rolls.

I too watched all the Lonesome Doves. I don't know how many times I have seen Tombstone.

I just re-watched it the other day yet again. Val Kilmer really killed it playing Doc Holliday. The one scene I did not like was the one where Kurt Russell is crying in the rain. I also think Dana Delaney looked very pretty in that movie. You might enjoy this video ifyou liked Tombstone.

I'm not sure it completely fits in the western genre, but Lawless (2012) is an under appreciated gem. Guy Pearce and Tom Hardy. Enough said.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I do love a good western. @Midnight LJR thanks for posting that list! Here's a couple of more unusual, dark horse picks:
  1. Dead Man. It's by Jim Jarmusch, who puts his own odd spin on the western. Neil Young provides the spare, distorted soundtrack. It's not your typical western, but I think it's great.
  2. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (on Netflix) is made up of six short features. I liked it so much, I have watched it several times already.
