A friend of mine drooped off his JK rubicon at the shop yesterday. They sent video of the rear axle making noise. Said he needed new bearings. They opened up rear diff and found motor oil instead of gear oil! He pulled a camper from Kentucky to Florida with if like that last year. He bought it used about 4 or 5 years ago. Shop says locker is ok but needs new gears. He has the 6 speed manual transmission. He’s running 33’s and pulls his camper so I suggested going to 4.56 or 4.88 . We don’t know yet if the front was subjected to the same punishment.

Absolutely! He doesn’t do any of the maintenance himself. He jokingly is blaming me because when he bought it, he wanted to have new diff covers installed. I told him he didn’t need them. Of course the shop would have discovered the motor oil in the diff.
