Moved to California, do I really need to replace my catalytic converter?

So they were the cats? I think anything beyond the cat doesn’t matter but they laws can be confusing and the inspectors would rather fail a vehicle rather than risk fines or jail.

I don't remember exactly why it failed. I'd have to see if I can find the paperwork. They just said any parts that aren't OEM will make it fail. Even if they're exactly the same, but don't have the right numbers stamped on them.

I think the inspector could have been wrong, it should only matter up to the cats and anything after that isn’t really emission equipment. But cats need the EO number. I help my buddy with early bronco fuel injection conversions and the 76’s we make smog legal. For years we have done one cat but a couple years ago the referee made us install 2 pre cats and one post cat because that’s what the 5.0 mustang motor we used came with from the factory. It doubled the price of the exhaust.

Just an update, went to another three shops in the area. They all said they would need to enter the Executive Order number stamped on the cats into the system to pass the visual inspection as they were clearly aftermarket cats, one gave me a final report with "TAMPERED" as the test result. Ended up putting the California cats on it.

Went thru something similar with my 06 a few years ago. Came orig from Philly. By the time I bought it, it had the necessary parts, but the two mini cats were empty cans. Had a local muffler shop replace them, and the smog inspection shop re-tested, and passed it. Muffler shop was in Westminster, and they said they had what was needed. About 400 bucks, as I recall. Have no idea if it would pass today, but I eliminated the need to worry about all that almost 2 years ago, by moving to Az. Ca does require the pre-cats. At least, on the 2006 model year.

Smog shop said it wasn't compliant, looked the cat part number up on a state website and said it didn't have an executive order approving that part number for use in CA. I'm in the south bay LA area, so there quite a few shops. I'll try another one and see how it goes.

How did it go? Also in Southbay.

Did they already enter your vehicle data like vin? if so It may red flag you no matter what shop you go to. Yes, Ca sucks ass in endless ways. You will pay dearly for that CARB sticker or stamping.

Hello folks. I am looking for a CARB compliant direct fit solution. This appears to be the cheapest out there. Anyone have a review on this, or any other ideas? Thanks.
