Hey guys and gals, I just bought a 2004 TJ sport last friday and my turn signals are real weird. When I turn them on, they work normally for like a second before blinking very rapidly then shutting off completely. The rapid blinking last for less than a second. keep in mind one of the side signals is completely gone so my dad thinks it's because of some kind of short circuit I believe he said. also the steering column is loose so I thought it might mess with the sensor, like the "you start turning and the car turns off the turn signal automatically you finish the turn" but that's most likely wrong since It's twenty years old (might not have that sensor?). Also, when I hold the signal down halfway before clicks into position it seems to stay on longer (I put this here incase it helps find the source of the problem). I would really appreciate some help on this. Thank you in advance!!

Welcome to the forums!

One thing to check is to see if the PO (Previous Owner) installed LED bulbs in the turn signals. If they used cheap ones or incorrectly wired them, it can cause weird issue as you're describing.

Other issues that is could be are:
  • Bad turn signal switch
  • Broken clockspring
  • Poor grounding (The cause of MANY issues BTW, not just this one)
  • Failing flasher relay
  • Dirty / corroded contacts at the bulb
  • Dirty / corroded contacts at the harness connections
Others will chime in with ideas or fixes. I would start by see what bulbs are in there and the condition of the contacts. Report back soon

well the front passenger side signal is completely missing (the wires are hanging out, the housing is gone) so that's why we came to the short-circuiting conclusion (Is it logical to come to that conclusion btw?) HELP ME OBI-WAN KENOBI YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE!! (so far lol XD)

Entirely possible. Fix that and go from there.

Also, fix that loose steering wheel column. It could be a safety issue. If I remember correctly and it's like mine was it's easy to fix. Look under the dash and you should see bolts securing the column. Tighten them up.

oh no the joint near it attaches to the differential was very loose, we got another one from a kenny u-pull and we have fixed that issue
