My Son called me at 9:30pm 2 weeks ago saying he ran out of gas in my Yj. Luckily he was 1 mile away from the shop. 5 gal later he had it back at the shop. Went the next morning to park it in it’s spot and it died 10’ from it’s spot. Turns out the fuel pump failed. It’s a mechanical pump so the fix was cheap and easy. My kids use the YJ and after they consistently brought it back with no fuel left I stoped keeping it full. One of the reasons no one drives my TJ. I never keep less than a 1/4 tank in my vehicles because the fuel keeps the pump cool and with the heat we have around here it’s hard in the pumps.
My wife is Sicilian so I tread very lightly around here
my wife has a Honda to use as a commuter while she drives 60+ miles/day to school and clinical rotations. She almost never drives it otherwise - usually she drives the 4runner which is the main family hauler.
I noticed she was driving the Honda earlier this week in scenarios that she wouldn't usually. Then I got in the 4unner and saw a fuel light and 27 miles to empty. I got out and took my truck. We live 12 miles outside of town, mind you, so the next time it's used it will have to be filled up.
So I guess we just don't drive the 4runner anymore.

Put a couple of gallons in a gas jug in the Jeep (just in case), and drive it until the gas light comes on. Note where the gauge is. Fill it up and note how many gallons it took. Now you know.
Mine has the needle in the middle of the red section when the gas light comes on, but it still has 3 gallons (30 to 50 miles, depending on how I'm driving).
I've had mine down where the needle was below the E. Apparently, I still had a half gallon left.
(Not implying) Hmmmm are you telling me i should get roto packs or some other mount for some gas canteens ?
Makes a perfect excuse for me to do so

I had a 1979 CJ7 that if the needle ever went below the 1/4 tank mark you were guaranteed to be walking.
My wife ran it out twice before it sunk in that it needed gas NOW.

Do you think the fuel pump lies in the bottom of the tank?
Most modern FI engines do I believe.
