Nashville TJ's Build - Continued

While looking around the rig after the Windrock trip, I noticed that one of the bolts on my skid plate had spun - first one in 18 years. So, wanting to make sure I got the correct heavy duty nutsert I ordered the kit from Blaine, along with his installation tool.

It was delivered today:

Too funny. The man has a great sense of humor.

It was funny, right?

RIGHT????

My hope is that some day a small project will remain a small project...

I tackled my spun skidplate nutsert today. I expected it to go quickly and finish up early this morning. Here is the offending bolt. I slapped a set of vice grips on it, and cut it off the head with a death wheel.

Before pulling the engine skid, I noticed that it was a bit bent, and in fact laying up against the oil pan and exhaust. Not the best pic, but you get the idea.

Damn, following Victor takes its toll....

Anyway, after cutting the bolt I pulled the skids. Here they are:

I can't remember if I did this, or if it was done at the factory, but the nutserts are tack welded to the frame. But after a quick kiss with the death wheel it came right out.

If you have never seen Blaine's nutsert installation tool, here it is. The genius of the tool is the bearing just below the flange nut in the picture. The bearing allows the nutsert to be set by holding the bolt stationary, and turning the nut. Blaine calls this the "No Strip Nutsert Setting Tool," since the pressure to set the nutsert is created by the nut pulling the bolt, and therefore the nutsert, straight toward the flange - rather than turning the bolt and stressing (and possibly stripping) the threads in the nutsert.

And it flat out works. The other great thing about the tool is that the bearing allows a super smooth application of force to set the nutsert - and there is absolutely no doubt when the nutsert is completely set.

And just like that - new nutsert.

I beat on the rig pretty hard, and generally when something bends I try to bring it back stronger (and I try hard never to miss an opportunity to add weight to the rig... ;)). On the passenger side of the skid I had some room to add reinforcement - on the driver's side there is no room as the engine and tranny go right to the edge. I had some 1.5" .250 wall square tube that I cut to size...

...and welded in place.

And after a little paint, my quick nutsert replacement project was complete.

Exactly my thoughts. Reinforce that puppy! Looks good.
