New or Used Gears?

So, a used gear set in good shape can be set up to run quiet. The best way is to know what the pattern looked like prior to pulling them. At a minimum, having the original depth shim is of great help. But it can be done without it. I have installed a few, after watching some videos, of course.

That said, the most for your buck will be new. We never offered a warranty on used gear sets.

It's too bad you don't live closer to Utah. There a guy selling front and rear complete Rubicon axles for $1000.00 just wants to get rid of them.

There's the issue. Who in possession of their full mental faculties is going to offer any meaningful warranty on used gears? Better to pay a few more dollars, buy new, and get a warranty.

BTW, most gear shops will not warranty their labor unless they also supply the parts and many reputable gear shops will refuse to install customer supplied parts under any circumstances. This is because in many states the Bureau of Automotive Repair imposes a warranty regardless of any disclaimers in the shop paperwork. From the perspective of the shop owner, why get involved in a potential shit show if you aren't getting a markup on the parts or have no recourse against a commercial supplier if the parts turn out to be a problem?

That being said, I have a set of used 4.88 ring and pinion gears for Rubicon front and rear Dana 44 axles with factory lockers, free to the taker for the cost of boxing and shipping. There were no issues with the gear sets before they were removed and replaced with 5.38 gears, and they are perfect in appearance, nonetheless there is no warranty.
